Disabling the recently opened files

On some applications, such as VLC and NeoOffice laid on the dock, there is a feature showing the recently opened files by them. If I right click on the VLC for instance it shows a list of files I played recently and same for NeoOffice either.

Is there a way to turn off this feature ?
