But I did find the software I wanted from apple (mainly iWork) was much cheaper than Office and it too was easier to use.

Easier to use, but lacking in many features people use (especially Numbers > Excel).

Just thought i'd add that Apple have, in my experience, made Mac OS 10.5.x updates a buggy, tiresome experience. Permissions tend to get ripped to shreds unless you use the big, 600MB combo update. Tiger on the other hand was perfect.

This explains why you'll have to pay for a non-buggy Leopard (or "Snow Leopard") in something like 6 months time!

The interface is, at the very best, confusing for a Windows user; at worst, prepare to be infuriated.

If you first used Macs and went to Windows you would find the same.

These are just differences, they aren't necessarily negatives.

True however Numbers is a 1.0 product. Excel is easily on version 12 by now.

It is also true that:
Keynote > Powerpoint.

Give Apple a chance!

more like a year , if lucky ...how long have the machine anticipated arrivals been going on ? what will it be like for 10.6:eek:

Anyway, back on topic... you can't, without a hack, make folders display before files. Windows does this, but not Mac OS X. For some people, especially switchers used to the Windows way, this is somewhat irritating.

Where can I get this hack?!!

This is the ONE Finder issue that drives me nuts. I can live with many of OS X's other quirks but this one is near-infuriating, because I commit the one cardinal Mac sin: I like to organize my own files, rather than let the Mac take over and do it all for me.

I brought it up once on the forums here, and suggested Apple should provide an option to choose how to sort folders, and was roundly beaten down with helpful suggestions like "no, Apple should not provide the option, if you can't accept that this way is better, you can go back to Windows", etc.

Hello all,
Also, how many of you had to return their mac to Apple for reparations?
Eothun123

Are you at war with somebody so that they are asking you for reparations? ;)

Anyways, on a more serious note, the major downsides of OS X is that some software, including proprietary specialized titles, does not work with OS X.

Some hardware also does not work with OS X.

As a result, whenever you are buying a piece of hardware or a gadget, you need to make sure that this particular item/model works with OS X.

Also, OS X has a certain disadvantage in Office applications. In particular, I (myself a Mac user) would not recommend OS X if you are working with large spreadsheets: Excel 04 is pretty sluggish even on fast hardware, and Excel 08 is even worse.

Flash is bad for Mac ....also I've found that any TV show's from the BBC via they're iPlayer and channel 4's on demand service are not catered for on OSX
& seeing as these are the only two channels I have much interest in , it kinda pi**es me off

Granted you're up the creek with CH4 but iPlayer works fine on Firefox or Safari, though you may need to empty your browser cache before the first time you use it.

No dice here ?! tried everything I can think of , including all different browsers , emptying cache , deleting cookies , reinstalling said browsers etc

I was trying to watch Countryfile online via iPlayer earlier and it was like watching a slide show of still pictures.
The audio was fine though ... I could use it like a radio I suppose( btw I'm not being sarcastic , this has been bothering me for a while now)
I can't even download any show's to see if that would work because I am on OSX & no software is in place for it from the BBC & even though they say it's coming it never does !. I mean , if the BBC doesn't do software it !!:(

As for Flash content , I couldn't even use that as radio....the audio is all over the place , granted flash isn't optimized (or whatever) for OSX but I'd call that a disadvantage so there you go , all I can think of really .
Apart from that , which is fairness is not that much , OSX is OK .

Used Windows for a long time now, I even have Rocket Dock and a mac theme complete with boot screen to pretend it's a mac :p

Just one thing to keep in mind: just because you buy a mac doesn't mean you're stuck with just OS X. Macs can run Windows too. And with Parallels, you can even windows side by side with OS X.

So, if you have games, or any other app that you need windows for, you just run windows. No big deal.

In any case, once I got used to OS X, I found increasingly less of a need to deal with Windows. Now it doesn't exist on any of my Macs, though I can still remote Desktop to the windows computer at work in the rare event I need it.
