I heard that in Germany a few weeks ago all audiobooks downloaded via Musics were deleted by Apple without notice (and without apology).
And this happened without a corresponding initiative from the publishers there.

Recently I bought Lost season 1-3 and now they released the complete series and no longer sell the 1-3 season set I have but I still have access to it and also can download it. So even though things may not be for sale you should still have access

But the point is, all episodes of Lost are still available for purchase on iTunes, which is why you can see them in your library.

If a distributor withdraws a title from iTunes, Apple are contractually obliged to remove purchases from your library. If I now want to watch my purchased movie "Betty Blue", I have to buy it again from the "BFI Player" as it's now gone from iTunes.

I think this is the norm in most situations.

The problem is that the OP and others have said that with some content they lose all access to it, streaming and downloading, with the exception if they already had the content downloaded to their computer, they could play their locally saved file.

Otherwise, they can no longer play the movies that they purchased.

So this actually happens huh? wow.. I thought the Lion King missing thing from a few years back was a one-off... Sorry guys.. 😔 I guess we should start investing in a hard drive or two to protect our purchases...

Sucks I got my apple tvs for my movie purchases mostly... The idea of having all of my movie purchases in a little box without having to put in discs was nice. Especially at night when I put something on on low volume to help me doze off... But this takes a big incentive for me and others like me to buy. Nowadays I mean.. If I were looking to purchase one for the first time.

I bought a few iTunes movies in the past, I found out that we are really just renting the movies. I never bought another movie from iTunes again.

I think I only have one movie which doesn't show on my iPad (all titles streamed), but is on my Mac (all downloaded).
When I looked in the store it was there with a 'buy' option (indicating I hadn't bought it), and discovered it had been re-listed with a different distributor.

Usually in those cases you’ll find it’s still available via the library.
However, have you tried looking/search via the ATV app on your iPad recently?
A recent update linked store entries with library purchases.

I keep a tally of my purchases but I should probably record the titles as well.

You'd think studios would do the right thing by actual paying customers, they need all the ones they can get.

As such I have no moral qualms about circumventing DRM to back up my purchases. Though as noted above you can't download the 4K version.

Not necessarily. You can no longer purchase Farscape Peacekeeper Wars but I still have it.

That's an oversight on Apple's part. You won't always have it.

For example, I was able to play Lilya 4 Ever for some time after purchases disappeared, but it is now gone from my library. As I say, Apple are contractually bound to remove items from your library if they are no longer available for "purchase" on the iTunes Store.

It still niggles me that Apple advertised "Build your collection" and offer a "Buy" button when they can remove your purchases on a whim.

It’s been missing from iTunes for about 15 years or so now. I bought it in 2005 before there was even HD versions available for everything.

The content owner may still have a licensing agreement with Apple. See the pending court case. In my experience it is very rare for iTunes movies to remain in the library once withdrawn for sale, and I say that as someone who has purchase (and lost) a great many iTunes movies.

"When a licensing agreement terminates for whatever reason, Defendant is required to pull the Digital Content from the consumers’ Purchased Folder and it does so without prior warning to the consumer"

Betty Blue is back in the iTunes Store.

I’d be inclined to search the ATV app first just to make sure it’s not playable before you decide to purchase again.

They happily took my money a second time. Aren't I lucky?
That sucks, however you should’ve waited for that inevitable price drop.
It probably wont be long before all the second sight titles that were recently added to the store drop in price.

I had this issue recently with movie “Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory”. When iTunes changed the title to “Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory”. I had to contact Apple and they restored my purchase with the new 4K version.

Problem is that sort of thing is covered in their T’s & C’s which you agreed to when you created your AppleID and accepted the terms of using the iTunes Store.
I’m not saying it’s right, just that legally I’m not so sure you’d get anywhere.
The same applies across all digital platforms, not just Apple.
Apple at least does give you the option of downloading upon purchase in a max of HD but not everyone does that.

Here’s an article you may find of interest
I have DVD backups of content that I really like. Other than that if apple removes it I lose it.
