What’s the deal with saving photos in messages with iOS 15? The new download button just pins it? Cause they’re all being deleted from the library when the message is deleted?! I don’t understand. Lost a dozen pics as soon as I deleted the message. Not cool.

How do you save photos now?! The new download button is pretty misleading. Even if I do the long press and then save it, it still gets deleted from the library a few minutes after the message is deleted.

hm… just saved a picture from an iChat conversation to Apple Photos, then deleted it from said conversation, still in Photos. iPadOS 15.

Thank you for the reply. It happened on 12 with ios15 so I set up 13 as new it is still happening. All I can think is iCloud Photos is somehow corrupted. I'm going to sign out of every device and sign them all back in to see if that helps.

Just tried deleting photo from conversation with my wife. I saved it first then delete from the conversation, the photo is still in my library.
iPad Air, iPadOS 15.

It doesn’t disappear right away. Mine just did it again. 10 min later the photo is gone. I’m at a loss what’s going on.

Even after signing every device I own out of iCloud and resetting them it is still happening. I saw a post on Reddit about it as well so at least it’s not just me.

I just checked and my saved photo from iMessage was deleted as well. It wasn’t deleted right away, you’re correct, but now it’s gone 😳
..and its not in Recycled Bin. 😳😳

Good thing that I rarely delete photo from iMessage but still..

Well I’m glad I’m not crazy at least but it’s shocking that photos just vanish. I hope they fix this SOON

I submitted multiple bug reports on this. To me, this is a critical level bug, and I think a lot of people are going to loose important photos until this is fixed. If this is intended behavior now in iOS 15, they at least need to give a massive warning that deleting the photo in iMessage will delete the associated one in Photos. Although this makes no sense given that I have iCloud for iMessage disabled. The photos shouldn't be the same storage, since it's being stored local within the iMessage data on the phone itself.

For those wondering, it doesn't happen immediately. It happens anywhere from a few minutes to a day later. You'll just go into photos and suddenly the imported photo is gone forever. It won't even be in iCloud on other devices, or in the hidden folder.
