But the iPads retina display didn't bring up the cost that much.

Do me a favor; go in the apple store, select the 2.3Ghz non retina. Select 8GB ram and 256GB SSD, then tell me how much the retina display added on the new MBP price compared to the result.

Don't forget you can't upgrade the graphic to 1gig... ops!

I'm about to feel a little old... but has everyone forgotten that the baseline prices for the 15" MBPs used to be $1999 and $2499?? The price difference, at cost, is almost $100 difference from non-retina to retina, without markup.

$400 difference from base model without and with the retina also yields an SSD and double the ram, while losing a cheap HDD, an Ethernet jack, and a cd drive. By apple's standards, it almost feels... generous!

Really? Where'd ya buy it from?

:apple:

From this picture I would say $2200 for the Retina MacbookPro is an amazing price, look at the upgrade for the 256gb ssd alone...

If Apple wants to be more competitive in the computer world, these prices are never going to cut it. You can get like 4 fully loaded PC laptops with all the bells and whistles like Blu Ray drives, which you can't even get on the new MBP, for the price of the LEAST expensive one. Then $2800 for what is essentially a 15 inch netbook with retina, are you serious? What a joke.

No. Don't forget ,Apple dominates the $ > 1000 set. So what if all their boxes are over 1000? If they were uncompetitive none of them would sell.

Oh guess what amazon has the 13 inch mbp listed as the TOP SELLING laptop. right now.

4 top rated laptops? Macbook Pro, Macbook Pro, Macbook Air, Macbook Air.

Looks like they aren't having problems moving kit.

Big deal. If you think people are going to shell out $3k or even $2500 for a stripped down 15 inch laptop just because its a "retina" display, thats funny. It doesn't even have a Blu Ray drive, ethernet or firewire ports. People like me will start looking more seriously at Windows laptops with all the features we want and/or need and save a couple grand in the process.

The only thing that's funny is how upset you are at the runaway success of these things. You do realize they are SOLD OUT right now at this very second on the Apple store website rite? Went from 24 hour ship to 5-7 day ship to 2-3 week wait. TWO TO THREE WAIT for a laptop thats been available for a few hours. Why you hatin? Go get a windows box, nobody cares (I have two). Apparently there are alot of people who disagree with everything you have to say.

This is absolutely the ultimate laptop.
I could afford one if I sold my air + tb, but is probably overkill for me anyways.
Congrats to all who get one, I'm sure you won't be disappointed!
:D

I was hoping they would just scratch the old MBP lineup and just come out with new retina lineup for both 13" and 15". They should have somehow tried to make a basic 2.5 HDD/SSD fit. I know the one i purchased for my MBP has a height of 9.5mm = .95cm. The height of the new retina MBP is 1.8cm. Plenty of room to make it fit. Not having flash storage as standard would have drastically reduced the price.

I was looking for it to be priced for the same as the current model 15.4" model and just basic speed bumps. Clearly apple wants an entirely new next gen MBP with soldered in flash storage so no one can upgrade after purchase. Bad direction if you ask me. They're asking premium pricing!!

European prices vs US prices

I think the US prices are not that bad.
But suddenly you pay more in Euro's than in Dollars.
In the past it has always been a bit less Euro's than dollars, or in the worst case the same.

For example the new MacBook Pro (in the Belgian store):
Base model: $2199 vs €2299 (equivalent to $2871)
High end model: $2799 vs €2929 (euivalent to $3658)

Anyone here an idea why their computers would be so much more expensive in Europe than in the US. Has always been te case, but this time it's just ridiulous. About 1/4 more if I would buy them here.

Is this to drive the US economy and make people buy them in the states?

Yeh its true its ridiculous! Why would European people need to pay more for the exact same thing? :/
Thats the reason why i'm suddently not sure anymore to buy that great machine :/

15" netbook with a retina?!

Please show me a netbook with quad-core processor.

Having the exact same doubts here!
Even if I would buy it through the company and be able to deduct the taxes, it would still be cheaper to buy it in the US :(

I tought the exact same thing.. I wonder if you could replace the qwerty with azerty. Even if it wouldn't be possible i wouldn't mind using a qwerty machine instead.

Question: Does anyone here think there will be any downward movement in the price of the SSD upgrade (512 to 768gb) in the 2.6GHz retina macbook pro?

I thought maybe another hundred bucks or two from the base model 15" which is 1700.

Which does not have a SSD or a high-resolution screen. Another two hundred bucks wouldn't even cover the 256 GB SSD. Perhaps it's time for a dose of reality or a new job?

Your post is far too logical. It should be full of rants and perhaps an explanation of how you can holiday in Paris for 2 months instead of buying a new computer.

You have no idea how expensive SSD's are do u

Dude.

Blu ray belongs on the ps3 end of.

The rest u list is 1999.

Go buy a dell.

WOW people are acting strange.

We all know Apple and their premium prices.

This is Apple's new MBP. IMO, the most significant update to an Apple laptop EVER. It costs 400$ more than the base model. HOW, I ask you, HOW can you be disappointed? WHAT could POSSIBLY have been your expectations?

256GB FAST!! Solid State
Capable 1GB GPU (Granted, not the strongest, but still..)
Blazingly fast CPU
Maintains OK battery life
SLIMMER, sleeker design. 2kg is extreme for a 15"
Amazingly high res screen

I'm not even getting this myself (keeping my 17"), but still, this is without a single doubt an amazing update, and IMHO the best value Mac ever. I'm not kidding. It's that grand.
