  • 5.1 Surround Sound not working
  • The navigation feeling does not fit the overall Apple TV experience:
    • The "cursor"/focus is much slower
    • and it's jumping instead of sliding over the elements
    • the navigation sound effects are not working
  • No intelligent top shelf which makes suggestions

And yet the ATV app is by far the best of the Amazon apps I've tried on PS4, Roku, fireTV and Apple TV... I guess that doesn't mean much, of course.

I guess if you don't like it, wait for the next version.
I did not think that Amazon Prime even had 5.1 audio.
I know my TV does not.
I guess I need to hook it up to my home theatre receiver to see if it works.
[doublepost=1512609713][/doublepost]From Amazon help page:

"High Definition (HD)
High Definition (HD) provides a high quality picture, with display resolutions up to 1080p.This is similar to what you would see with a Blu-ray disc. HD video also features an enhanced sound experience and 5.1 multi-channel audio (for available titles, and with compatible sound equipment).:

Thus, you would need to pick HD video to even have a chance at 5.1 audio.

I have a Sony Android TV and Amazon took a long time to implement 5.1 on that. It was a contentious issue for at least a year.

So we had to wait years and hear pure BS from Amazon about Apple’s “unfair” cut even though they always had a way to avoid it. Only to get a half baked app without 5.1 audio???
Seriously Bezos?

Aside from 5.1, seems fine to me 4K, universal search, TV app integration... who cares what it's built on? It's just as good (or bad) as all the rest of the versions of the app on everything else, but neatly integrated into Apple's ecosystem.

I hope they fix the 5.1 (it will be), but it has everything else.

Any one willing to play the film "Manchester by the Sea" (UHD) on the Prime Video Apple TV 4K app and tell me if it seems oddly dark (color/contrast/brightness-wise) to them?

I was excited to see how UHD content would look on the Prime Video app and tested it out on the above mentioned film and it looked so much darker than my copy that I have purchased via the iTunes store. Granted the one in the iTunes store is only HD, it still shouldn't look that much different though color, contrast and brightness-wise though.

Interesting that the ATV Amazon Prime app does not do 5.1 sound. Hope everything is okay! Not a big thing if the rest of it is trouble free.

Steven Troughton-Smith has been poking around and he believes that it is not a native iOS App but instead has a tvOS-compatible UI over the base multi-platform app that runs on TVs, multi-media devices (Roku, FireStick, ChromeCast) and consoles (Xbox / PlayStation).

Maybe, but it doesn't use the same UI as on the PS4 or LG WebOS apps. Not sure about other platforms, such as Tizen or Android TV.

Not sure what everyone is complaining about? It basically feels like the fire tv app. Not really anything fancy. I guess some of you guys were expecting an Apple TV special edition app?

The app on my 3rd gen ATV is buggy. I've had it stop while watching and go black requiring a restart a couple times. I'm also not receiving 5.1 audio.

The reason why the GUI is a big load of **** seems to be that Amazon just used HTML and wrapped them in an app container.

HFS. That's astounding, in the worst possible way ... I generally think JG is a bit of a goober, but speaking as a developer - who has been in some of the same situations (i.e., one off platform maintenance vs. _this_) - he's right on with his assessment.

That being said, the end game for us - as long as they get 5.1 resolved - is an improvement over dealing with another device (and our APV is limited, especially now with Movies Anywhere).

Considering it was some five months between announcement and deployment, yes some of us were expecting a native tvOS app and not a re-skin of the app used on Smart TVs and Blu-ray/DVD players.

Given that Amazon are not exactly motivated to support the Apple TV when they have Fire TVs to sell, I think the app turned our surprisingly well (lack of 5.1 notwithstanding). It supports siri and the TV app (something Netflix have no interest in doing), HDR and 4K is present and correct, and it even looks okay. There are still lots of TVOS apps which are quick and dirty ATV3 ports and are as bare bones as it's possible to get.

Perhaps you just get better ATV apps than we do in the UK, but here, the standard is very, VERY low.

It's functional, so overall I'm happy.

And Amazon is motivated to get as many Prime memberships as they can, which is why they do support so many platforms other than their own (Fire TV).
