I have a 4870 1gb I flashed 4 years and it is just as fast (30 fps) as the new 7950 3gb i just got. Its the Gigabyte model and I haven't flashed it but it starts up right away and seems to work fine. I reset the PRAM and fan controller. Its running at 81 degrees. I have a MP 3,1.

I looking for the performance is Wow and I just put 12gb of memory in it. Is it just that the Blizzard games don't run that well on the ATI cards? I read how the Nvidia cards run them better, but I didn't think Blizz games were that UN-optimised for the ATI cards.

I think I'm going to send it back. Should I get a GTX 680? Any ideas would be appreciated.

    Hello there,

I think that because WOW is a very old game and it is not optimized well in Mac OS. Did u try to run it on bootcamp yet?

No, haven't tried in bootcamp. I'm just surprised that a brand new card with three times the memory is no better than a four year old one.

For the love of God stop gaming in OS X if you value performance. I barely hit 70fps in TF2 in OS X. In Windows with same settings I can reach beyond 200fps. There is performance disparity on every single Mac title out. My GTX 680 is barely faster than my old 5870 in OS X games. In Windows it is easily 2 times faster sometimes more. It's nice to have the option to run games in OS X. But you can't expect great numbers. The HW on Mac's is just fine but it needs to be run in Boot Camp to shine in games.

Windows 7 is $100 OEM, pick it up when you buy your video card.

Get the PC version of the 7950 and a the Never Settle bundle of free PC games to get you started.

Are you sure the FPS is free to run as fast as it can? In a lot of FPS game I play often the Max FPS is set in a config or ini file. This is true of al the Quake engine games, all the UT games, and several others too. For example Q3a installs with the FPS set to 80 or something and I can't get more than 80FPS until I modify the .config file. With my current system I can get about 480FPS out of it if I set the max to some ridiculously high number like 999. That's with the highest settings at 1080p and of course Vertical Sync turned off. TF2 may indeed be the same deal... Do a search to fine out the specifics of the game you're dealing with.
