I'm quite disappointed with the performance. I have the latest MBP with an upgraded HDD to 7200RPM and 4GB RAM. I am running an uptodate CoD4 with the 9600M and it's barely playable, at bad graphics =/ I have it set to optimal settings, which it automatically sets them to pretty low. No AA and low res. The only thing I can really bump up is the res to 1440x900. Its FPS are pretty low =/ I don't know what else to say

Disappointed, expected the 9600 to perform much better with CoD4

Strange, i played with with very good graphics. Are you playing the osx version or the windows version?

When you're in the menu or game press the tilde key (little squiggly by '1') and then type /cg_drawfps 3

Test out the game and then report back what your average FPS (little box in the upper right) is saying. Should be about 80-100 FPS.

I'm on the boat level (haven't gotten far with this performance), between 25 and 35 FPS

It's an underclocked laptop graphics card, and you're using the Mac version. What were you expecting? 35 frames is certainly playable, but if you really want to play it, get a copy of Windows and a PC version of COD4. Game performance under OSX is a joke.

Ouch! When I used to play COD4 on my MBP (Late 08) I'd get 90 or so...

Here's a list of graphical options to make sure they are set to:

Video Mode: 800x600
Screen Refresh Rate: 60hz
Aspect Ratio: Auto
Anti-aliasing: Off
Brightness: About a third of the way up (this is just for easier kills :p)
Sync Every Fram: No
Dual Video Cards: No
Shadows: No
Specular Map: Yes
Depth of Field: Yes
Glow: No
Number of Dynamic Lights: Normal
Soften Smoke Edges: Yes
Ragdoll: Yes
Bullet Impacts: No
Model Detail: Normal
Water Detail: Low

Try these and report back!

lol I'm sorry but I refuse to play at those settings, especially the 800 res, this is 2009, not 1999.

Can someone else confirm the performance discrepansy between the Windows and OS X versions?

true.. i recently installed Star Wars Jedi Academy and even though it is an older game... there is a huge performance difference between running the OS X version and running the windows version under CrossOver

may not be the same.. but i remember how badly spore sucked on my MacBook haha

Try it at 1280x800, it still looks fine. If you want to play demanding games at full resolution, boy did you pick the wrong computer.

Also, if you want a resolution for 2009, try 1080p.

If you want proof of OSX's poor game performance, give this link a try.

It should be said however that while OSX isn't the best for games to begin with, most of the blame lies with the developers.

get a pc, common knowledge.....macs are not gaming computers-go but one of those ugly dell monsters for that

I didn't get this Mac for games. As a matter of fact I barely play games any more which is why I sold my gaming computer and got a Mac.. but I was just expecting it to be faster than 30 FPS average at low-medium settings

Yah, i no how you feel. But like i tell people, um.....get a ps3, their made for games, and HD at that. But id rather be stuck being bored with no games or crappy games than using windows again

Because Windows is the worst os ever, right? I'm sorry you believe that's a fair trade.

It is a fair trade, just because most software is written for windows doesnt make it good. Like I said, buying a computer more mostly gaming is stupid. Thats why there are Xbox, PS3, and what ever else. Computers arnt for playing some freaking fantasy game. But yah, im sure im stupid for thinking that dropping $400-500 for a ps3 and getting HD quality games that you can also play on the internet is stupid. Makes more sense to buy a $3000+ computer that will be too slow to run new games in 1 1/2 years

Very nice. What fps do you get when you play online? I get around 70-100 on ffa3 which was a huge leap from my old Powermac, at about 15-25fps ahaha. I was just wondering what the difference between this Macbook and the new Unibody Macbook is for this particular game.

lol its b/c spore just sucks in general after like an hour

as usual, the windows version has better fps. I tried the demo on mine at high settings at native resolution and get 30+ fps.

I have both the windows version and the mac version and I've noticed a couple things.

1: That is OS X, COD 4 multiplayer has much better FPS (about 20 frames higher) than the single player app. I have no idea why, but it happens to my friend to. In multiplayer with 1440 x 900 res, and all other setting set to medium, I get 50 fps which is perfectly playable. In single player mode with the same settings I get 30 fps.

2: Windows plays it at a much higher fps. I don't know if it's the software or the OS, but windows seems to play it at a constant 60 - 70 fps with the same settings as on the mac side. And the framerate is the same in both single player and multiplayer.

So, if you want the best FPS, just install windows. You get a huge benefit. Plus, steam is awesome.

I recently played the Demo on my July 2008 Mac Book Pro under Boot Camp and XP. I was disappointed, it wasn't playable on the native resolution and the optimal settings sucked. It also took forever for the demo to load (on my old Dell PC and Xbox it was very quick).

For the first time ever I'm thinking I might need a Mac and a Windows PC :\

nothing is wrong with your lappy, its the terrible OSX version, Aspyr is one of the worst developers on the face of the planet. I was playing crysis warhead today and getting 40fps at medium and that game is way more intense than COD4.
