I have had the iPhone X since 2017. The screen on this phone has been brighter and whiter than all iPhones since, so I had no desire to upgrade. That is until I compared the screen to the 13 Pro Max. I compared screens in a couple of stores and the 13 pro max screen was as white and even brighter than the X. So I placed my order with ATT.com.

Fast forward to today…the screen on my new iPhone 13 Pro Max is not as bright as my X and not as white. Has anyone had a similar experience?

Can I return the phone to an ATT store even though I ordered it online?

Thank you.

Firstly, is True Tone turned off? Secondly there’s always a brightness difference with screens in store compared to outside. The store screens are set to run at higher brightness plus they are under intense white light as well, your new phone likely can get that bright but only when it needs to or while watching HDR content etc.

If you’re unhappy, speak to AT&T and either try another device or just cancel the upgrade/ change.

The rest of the phone should still be enough of an upgrade though surely?

Starting with the iPhone 12 it seems like they changed auto brightness behavior, the general brightness is lower than on the iPhone X. Try turning auto brightness off on both phones and compare again. If the X is still brighter, there might be a problem.

Screen color and brightness is always a lottery on the same model of iPhone. Some look great, others not so much. They’re definitely not all the same.

Thanks for the responses. Yes, the 13 pro is superior to the X, no doubt. For me, though, the screen is why I have stayed with the X for 4 years.

That said, today the phone was brighter (perhaps due to night shift). But, while browsing the web and watching snipits of YouTube videos, the phones brightness dropped considerably. Then, it got brighter and the it dropped again. Any idea what’s going on?

Probably auto brightness is enabled would be my guess.

And: when the phone gets hot e.g. brightness also decreases automatically until it cools down a bit more (irrespective of auto brightness).

I have been through 4 different units for the 13 Pro Max for various reasons. I have seen both ends of the spectrum with the screens....Bright/Crisp/Vibrant and Dimmer/Dull/Washed Out. All were compared with the same settings so it just goes to show the variances you may see. If your experiencing the display dim randomly, are you sure its not because its getting too hot?
