Disappointing WWDC...no surprise

Not sure how the lack of new hardware would effect your ability to develop on this generation of Mac computers.

The world has moved on from 3yr old computers. For example, our clients are asking for VR - either we go elsewhere or they do.

It does not. Though its kinda foolish to pay recommended retail price for hardware that is between 18-36 months out of date.

I never expected any mention of hardware at the developers show. What bugs me is that there was no mention of any features or enhancements that will directly impact pro users outside developers. Enhancements to GPU General computing support, refined graphics drivers, new core frameworks that push the envelope and make it easier for dens to make apps that do really powerful things...

WWDC and Mac OS releases used to be filled with stuff like this. Now we spend two hours hyping the glory that every middle school boy will now be able to sketch a dick and send it via iMessage in seconds. Sigh.

I know what. We have a whole WWDC to fill and nothing new to announce. Let's find one or two newish things, talk about them, get someone to demonstrate them and then waste some more time with a video showing the ecstatic audience the exact same thing. Then , in case no one noticed we'll do yet another video summing up the nothings with , yes you guessed it, absolutely nothing again.....pause for adulatory applause. Bye Apple.

Easy for you to say.

Some of us have been with Apple since the 80's and the days of the 'Fat Mac' and IIe.

You know, back when you ran Page Maker on a tiny black and white screen plugged into an Apple Laser Printer that suddenly made 500 years of analog printing equipment obsolete?

I have a lot of time and money invested in hardware, software and workflow. Jumping to Windows would not be a trivial task by any means. Linux would be pointless since Adobe etc doesn't support the OS.

Any other great advice?

The question is : under Tim Cook can you see things changing? Is there any indication the new apple is not just about idevices? While the iPhone makes over 60% of the profit , us that use Mac pros, are irrelevant , both for hardware and software. We can keep dreaming and hoping that apple will once again view is as a customer base or we can google how many new stores apple is opening ......not around the world....but just in China and realise where the demographic is . Sometimes you have to bite the bullet. I'm transitioning over to Windows, it will take sometime, but i do not have faith in apple with TC running the show, he is a bean counter, who does not have vision, and focuses on what sells....which makes us the bottom.

Ok, strictly from a software point of view is clear that Apple is adding only consumer features to macOS. There is not a single mention of a pro usage of the macOS added. But i guess since this ***** Cook guy took over, he stated very clear that iPad is all that anyone ever needs. So you and me can kiss goodbye of a software that introduces real INNOVATIONS, like in WORK related. This guy sees macs as devices to draw a dic* and send it to your colleagues. Well, i moved to Dell and win after being with Apple since OS 7 days. I can' relate anymore with this company no matter how sad this makes me. I can't get used with the win no matter what i do, but i do my job(and real hardware that i use for my 3d work is waaaaay cheaper than apple's) and i guess it's all that matters in the end. I know a lot of Apple only guys like me, that are moved/moving away from Apple and it's going to get visible at one point. I know how many times high end customers asked me : what os is this(one marketing director chick asked me: what windows is this?)? And i recommended them macs; well like me guys who worked on macs did this and we created a trend for Apple products. Since we are no longer using them, the trend is down and will make them fade away. Once they will reach a tipping point, will be 90's all over again. Juts that this time there is no Jobs to save them again....

It's like the presentation was not aimed at devs but marketing instead. It really did look unrefined and rushed. My favourite part was the tvOS ....blah blah 5 minutes it's over, basically saying, we no longer care about the appleTV, over to the real money maker.....iPhone. ....

Actually, I'm looking forward to learning from his Hackintosh build. He's been really generous in sharing knowledge and helping folks in this forum.

Plenty of people are condescendingly telling us the keynote was not for developers, but press and general public. Given the content it's hard to disagree with that.

But anyway, developers need hardware to develop on. It's been three years since the last Mac Pro. How much longer are we supposed to sit around managing our expectations? There's been barely a mention to let us know it's alive. Is this how the apologists told us things would unfold three years ago? It isn't - they told us to relax, it will be okay. But by now we should have had GPU upgrades, dual CPU options, 4K monitors, and all our heavy computation would leverage working OpenCL drivers. Instead... iMessage bubbles for 12yr olds.

I am not saying that some of the Apple hardware line is long overdue for a refresh... just that the WWDC is not typically when we see hardware announcements. Sure, there have been some occasions where hardware was announced at (or around the time of) WWDC, but not seeing such an announcement does not mean that there are none in the offing.

I soooo wish I could disagree with you! But slowly I am beginning to see it the way you describe. A couple of years ago I was happily working with FCP and Aperture on my MP. Being productive and making a bit of money. But Apple has killed Aperture and has malformed FCP and the MP into something unusable if not horrible.
I know I can keep my 7 yr old MP running for some time but I would rather buy a decent and more performant successor. And I really fear it will be a win machine this time. Not because I want to, but because there is just no decent Apple alternative. With decent I mean a computer where parts can be added or changed and where function is more important than glossy magazine looks.
A long time ago, I used to build PCs. Recently, for the first time in 12 years, I build one again, for my son. Compared to 12 years ago it was even easier to do, and the end-result is a very fast and silent PC. Which can be modded and changed the coming years when needed.

I think we all love OS X because how it functions/ how we access things (noticed how I didn't mentioned stability).

But supporting a corporation that abuses their consumers and Mac Pro users.... We shouldn't tolerate their stupidity.

Move to BSD or linux then. You can even configure the Gnome desktop to look and feel like OSX.

I know what you're saying, but the tables have turned. Windows 10 seem to be more stable and less buggy than the last few OS X releases. It's sad but the "it just works" seems more fitting for W10 than OS X right now, or they are at least on par. I prefer OS X workflow too, but in every other aspect apple is currently falling behind.

My Windows 10 is only for gaming, and not much better any other Windows, still crash, may be it's the AMD driver, but OSX sure is a much more stable platform on my 4,1.

heh, when i watched the macOS part of the keynote, most of the new features they were highlighting had me thinking about how i'll be able to use those things in my work.. or, how i'll be able to work a little more smoothly/organized than current.

not really sure how you're considering something like desktop syncing or tabbed multi-docs a 'consumer feature'..

maybe if you do all your work on one exact computer then yeah, certain new features will be of little to no benefit so maybe they're unrecognizable as workflow improvements.. but if you work in a manner similar to myself (multiple computers + some things on a phone / multiple locations) then i think you'd see there are some enhancements aimed at pro users.

perspective i suppose.

You said developers need new hardware to develop on. How are we going to develop VR for Mac's that currently don't support it? The market is not mature enough, let alone on the Mac platform for VR.

For instance GuildWars 2 crashes my system every once in awhile is that Microsofts fault? If it is OSX crashes all the time when running GW2 so OSX must really suck.

I believe it went over 1100 for the 2010 gen (2012 wasn't a legit update)

Yeah I'm transitioning to both OS X and window. The only reason I gotta stay with OS X is because fcpx. I used to stick with OS X but not this time.

If second like jobs existed...the first thing that will be on news is "Tim broke down in tears after Jim jobs fired him." (I just made up a name)

That's a good way: I mean asking yourself how this program will help you or benefit.

Well maybe it's you? I never have that problem.

I know, it's hard to tell what's wrong. Same hardware, OSX 100% stable, but Windows 10 can crash a minute after login.

Anyway, it's just for gaming. No big deal. And once the game is loaded, I can play few hours without crashing most of the time.

Charlie Rose did an interview with Jony Ive and in that interview, Jony said that sometimes they had to place some projects on the back burner to get others done. I would venture to say that the iDevices and their software are now the prominent project.
