So my mother's iMac will read audio CDs just fine but when she puts in any kind of DVD it attempts to read it then ejects it. I am in CA while she is in Minneapolis so I can't really sit down with it, so I am looking for help troubleshooting it.

When she puts in a DVD it spins up but never mounts and just gets ejected.

    Ideas?

She is putting it in correctly (I actually had her try discs both ways and it would only spin up and attempt to read it one way) and it isn't a blu-ray. She has tried movie and data DVDs but the only thing that works that she has tried is audio CDs.

She could try blowing a little compressed air into the Superdrive slot in case there's dust on the DVD laser. If she does, just make sure that she doesn't tilt the can while spraying as this can lead to propellant liquid dousing the Superdrive's innards.

If that doesn't work I'd recommend letting Apple look at it.

Yeah I told her to do that when she first asked me about the problem. I don't know if she has done it, yet. I asked her if she tried anything I sent her in an email and she said no. She's just waiting for me to come for Christmas...

a change in the preferences.... when it asks you what to do with a DVD when entered maybe?

    Except I don't think there's a selection for automatically eject. :D

Good idea to have a look and see what's set there though, perhaps changing it to see if it makes a difference no matter what it says, or is that what you meant?

Sounds like hardware to me though.
