I noticed the other day that there appears to be a slight discolouration on the rear glass on one side. I’m not sure if this is something on the glass causing this but whatever it is it won’t clean off. It’s quite noticeable under any lighting and when wiping with a damp cloth it seems to hold on to water and reveals exactly where it is.

I wonder if it’s a patch of oleophobic coating missing or something as it seems slightly more grippy in this area than others.

The area circled in red is the patch I’m talking about (difficult to catch on camera but you can just about make out a line in this circle where there is a colour difference)

Any ideas?

Normally, I’d say live with it. However, that’s a large patch, it’s brand new, and most places have plenty of stock.

In your case, I’d suggest an exchange. You’ll get a brand new device hassle-free.

Thanks for the replies. Spoke to Apple who suggested returning it under the 14 day policy. Checked stock online and none of my nearest stores appear to have any in stock and the nearest one is over an hours drive away. Might just stick in another order and put up with this one until I reach the end of the returns window and all being well I should receive a new one by then (1-2 weeks).

Managed to call Apple today about extending the return window due to the current stock shortages and was directed to their sales department. Very helpful they have agreed to extend the return window for me and I’ve placed an order for a new phone (made payment as normal) and will return the current one for refund once the new one appears.
