So, this is a weird one...

I've searched around and can't find anything that comes close to this.

I have a 15" MBP that is connected to a ViewSonic external monitor. Everything worked fine, life was good.

I just got a new 15" MBP (newer model) and moved my data over to an SSD that I put in the new MBP.

Everything is working just fine. The weird thing is that, when I disconnect my external monitor and have my Mail app open, my mac makes a repeated ding sound and then repeats the swooshing mail sound (when you send an email) over and over again. It doesn't cause the beach ball or the Mac to lock up. It just makes those sounds. Sometimes it repeats alot, sometimes just a couple of times.

When the Mail app is closed and I disconnect, it doesn't make the sound.

It's so strange because it's just the hardware that's changed and it never did this on my old MBP.

Anyone ever heard of anything like this before?

Mail.app crazy sounds on wake from sleep

I have experienced this same issue and I also have an external monitor. Here's my situation: I have a 2009 27" iMac running Lion and it is connected to a matching 2010 27" monitor (mini display and usb, not thunderbolt). A lot of times when I wake the machine up from sleep I get a series of repeating dings from Mail.app and then a bunch of the whooshing sounds it makes when mail goes out. The first time it happened it scared me to death that my machine had a virus and a botnet was sending a million emails. It stops after a few seconds. Mail.app is really unresponsive while it is going on. Only other detail is that I have Mail Act On installed in my mail.app. What the heck is going on here?

Hey just found a support discussion that might relate to this. It might not be the monitor so much as the headphones/audio connection - could be an issue of the system buffering sounds and then releasing them when the headphones are connected. See the thread hear for a possible work around: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3564122?start=0&tstart=0

I'm glad it's just not me. But, sorry you've got the same issue.

It is really weird and I thought I had some kind of virus or bot too.

But it's also so random. Like today, I unplugged my external monitor while the Mail app was running and got none of the noises.

Bizzarre...
