The popular messaging app Discord has been updated with Handoff support, for an improved cross-platform experience across the iPhone, iPad, and Mac.

The release notes for the update explain what this means: "If you're in a Discord channel on one device and switch to a different device, you'll now see Discord pop up as a recommended app in the Dock on Mac and iPad, or the App Switcher on iPhone. Open Discord there to jump straight to the channel you had open on your other device."

Handoff support requires version 293.0 of the Discord app, which was released on Monday. The update is available in the App Store.

It’s amazing how developers keep slowly adopting this amazing technology that was announced more than a decade a go.

That said, I stopped using Discord a while ago because of how much data they gather, especially through their apps. Or that’s what I read back in the time. Also, how privacy unfriendly they are, with still no e2ee, or keeping all your communications logged, without the ability to delete your entire history, etc…

I really don't enjoy Discord, but I don't know to stop using it ...

Too many products/communities have made that their "only" on keeping up with support and updates and conversation.

Discord is kinda of a dinosaur, has been practically dead in Europe since Telegram dropped. Not saying Telegram is any better (no clarity in terms of data protection), but Discord has never been convenient for communication. I mean, UI is a cluttered mess, admins and mods of some channel can establish the weirdest rules I've ever seen (such as that you need to be subscribed for 3 month to be able to write a message in chat), as well as other issues that people here noted like weird notifications on iPhone

It's good to see this feature added! I use Discord on the web so I can easily open and close it without dealing with the long loading time on the desktop version. But this might be handy to have when I'm sitting down at my desk after moving from my phone.

Handoff is great. I’d like it to be utilized more. I wish Safari could resume at the same scroll position in a web page or time stamp in video when handing off (or do they now? I haven’t checked in awhile). And I wish video apps could hand off to/from their corresponding apps in different devices, especially the Apple TV box.

Same. I almost deleted it when they asked for a phone number..but for a couple things I need support for, it's the only option. I'll never install it on my phone.

It's heavily gamer-focused as well, and I'm not a gamer, at all, so it's a bit annoying. Too many quirks and options, when I just want it work more like IRC did, without all the extra.

You still can't pop open channels into their own windows on the Mac, as the app is not document based. Much more convenient to just have browser windows.

Discord is starting to consider its presence on a Mac? This is the least of its shortcomings . Because Discord on Mac is web based (made on Electron which runs a modified Chromium browser), it doesn't have official support for USB audio interfaces. My voice comes out intermittently to other users. I used to to have to run Discord on the Chrome browser for my audio interface to work, but the last time I tried it, it is not not working either.

Considering Discord is primarily a PC gamer chat app, it's kinda interesting that they'd add support for an Apple exclusive feature like that.

Seeing as I use discord for keeping in contact with friends from games I have played and gaming communities I find this to be a nice addition

I use Discord with 7 Days to Die (a long-developing / early access multi platform game). It’s built into the game. I also just use discord across iPad / Mac / iPhone (and PS5) while gaming. Mac’s are pretty great gaming machines overall - especially once you realize you can basically install any Windows game.
