Will the Apple store specifically (not 3rd party sellers) discount MBA 3s when the 4s are rolled out? I have my eye on a MBA 3 15” with 24gb mem/1 tb storage. Need to buy through the Apple store to 1) trade in a MBA M1, and 2) get the Apple military discount. Do I wait for the M4 roll-out?

They might continue to sell the base spec like how they currently sell the M2s, but probably not custom/bto configs. Your best bet is to either order new w/military discount now or shop the refurb store and wait until your desired config is available.

I believe you can apply the trade in towards a refurb but might want to call Apple and confirm.

Quite possible that Apple will have M3 only on the 13" once the M4 models are out just like how it is now, i.e M2 available only on 13" model and 15" has only M3.

After the launch of M4 models, I think 15" will have only M4 as an option while 13" might have M3 and M4 as options.

So expecting no discounts on the 15" model as older models will be discontinued and the 13" M3 should take $999 price tag

they might discount by 100-150 dollars until they sell all the inventory *which actually might take years. Last year in June at Washington Apple store, I bought new iPad 9 with a discount - they still had it even after iPad 10 was released few months ago

Apple will certainly lower the price of M3 MBA when M4 MBA is released. Going on history they seem to discount by a $100 or so.

Having had Apple laptops over the years in my personal opinion it is always best to pay a little more for the latest chip you can get. Saving a hundred dollars on a $1300-$1500 laptop seems rather useless when you may keep the laptop for several years. Each new gen of m series generally brings several advantages that in my opinion are worth the extra cost. If you can get an education discount then you are saving a hundred bucks anyway so I would always opt for the newer gen chip.

Cost is a huge factor when buying a new laptop. I would wait until you have enough money to buy the best you can get without over spending or trying to future proof which doesn't work in my experience. Get the latest gen chip and just enough ram and ssd as you really need and nothing more.

Generally speaking, Apple does not discount their computers to the general public. They let places like Amazon and Costco and Best Buy do that. But you can get a good deal on their refurb website.

As a Vet, I also shop the Military Store, but also check out the Education Store, which accommodates trade-ins, offers similar discounts and allows interest-free installments. That the Military Store does not allow interest-free or other installment payments (to a population often in real need of them) remains a troubling mystery.

Apple is fronting the money for interest free payments and is sort of a discount. The military discount and interest free payments would be considered a double discount which Apple does not allow.

Well…Education Store discounts are…discounts and offer interest-free installments through the Apple Card/Apple Pay.

I suspect Apple will just stop selling the M3 and relegate any inventory of M3s to the refurbish store.
I do not expect the MacBook Air m3 will stop of being produced by apple, apple seams to keep their previous generation of MacBook Air now! The m2 will be dropped for sure!

After the release of the MBA M4, the 13” MBA M3 will replace the base 13” MBA M2 model currently available.

As for the 15” MBA, once the M4 is out, the M3 wont be available anymore.

Are you sure? The M3 is apparently expensive to produce, more so than the M4, that would make their "budget alternative" more expensive to manufacture than their latest and greatest model. And on top of that, minimize the incentive to up sell to M4.

It would be great for consumers of course, but it feels like if I were Apple, I'd keep the M2 and end the M3.
