I have a question about whether my hard drive is going or if maybe Disk Utility just can't fix it and maybe there is another program that might be able to fix it.

I have a g5 iMac whose HD crashed awhile back after an Apple Update. I was able to recover everything with my external HD, but now notice that there is an issue with my HD when I run disk utility. I boot from my original install disk so that I can run the Disk Utility program properly.

When I run "Verify Disk," I get the error:mad:  :

RESERVED FIELDS IN THE CATALOG RECORD HAVE INCORRECT DATA

I also get the error:

INVALID LEAF COUNT (It should be 5 instead of 236)

I then click "Repair Disk," but Disk Utility is unable to fix my second problem which I verify by rerunning "Verify Disk" and get the same problem I had before I tried to repair the volume.

Is there another program that could use to fix the Leaf Count issue or should I just go get another HD?

Thank you very much in advance for any help people can provide!;)

You need to run disk utility from the Mac OS X DVD, it should be sortable from that.

I wish that would fix it. I have been running Disk Utility from the Mac OS X DVD that came with the iMac and it still cannot fix the issue of the Leaf Count. I am concerned that the HD, is bad. Maybe a reformat of the HD would fix it?

Thanks for the message!

Anybody else have anyother hints or advice?

If the Disk Utility cannot fix these errors then you can either try Disk Warrior (which is hit and miss), or erase an reformat the drive.

Thanks. I guess I should just format and reinstall.

I appreciate the help!
