I'm partitioning an external HD so as to install and run snow leopard on one of the partitions, but do not want to lose any data from the external drive.

Before i do this I just want to make sure that I am correct in thinking that partitioning in disk utility on a computer running leopard will not erase the external hard drive.

Thanks

If there is enough free continuous space, it should work, but DU will warn you if you will lose data during the partition process.
Btw, is the "partition map scheme" set to "GUID"? Otherwise it will not work to boot OS X from it.

Yeah I'll set it to GUID. So if my external HD has 65 GB free it'll be fine and i won't lose anything? (sorry im really paranoid but i run itunes and iphoto off of it too!)
