Disk Utility Secure Erase is Stalling and filling Disk

Would anyone know why the erase feature of disk utility would Stall and cause osx to warn me of my disk being full? Im doing a 7 pass erase and when i do it off the bootable DVD it stalls at 14 hours. I left it on over night and never changed. I also tried just isntalling osx and erasing free space and after about an hour or so osx will warning me my disk is full when in fact im only using 3 gigs for the OS only. its an imac core 2 duo.

Sounds like a dodgy hard disk. Might be time to take it back to Apple for a replacement. 😱
