My 2016 13" MacBook Pro could not display the SMART status. I checked the internal, external HFS+ and APFS drives, they all display Not Supported in the SMART status.

I did some research on internet, some people said Disk Utility show the Not Supported message since Apple use NVMe drives, but I think I have seen it work on some new machines.

Is there anyone know about this? Thx.

Download the DriveDx app which shows a complete comprehensive overview of your drive and external hard drives. You can monitor SMART status and much more. I've been using it for all my drives and it works great.

Check in System Information at NVMExpress.

Thanks for replying. I checked it, but I did not see any information about SMART.

Thank you for this App information.

I want to know why my device show Not Supported.

Try doing a SMC reset and see if that helps. I have seen things not work correctly in Disk Utility and doing a SMC reset seemed to help.

-AFAIK SMART is not supported for external drives
-looking at screenshot post #1:
with a APFS drive connected through PCIe, you should be able to see the SMART status, if you click on "Macintosh HD" instead of "Apple SSD AP0256J"

I have only ever seen it reported on the physical device.

I guess I wasn't very focused :)
you're right.

on my MBP (SSD SATA) the SMART status is shown on the physical device.

on my cMP (NVMe blade) there's no SMART shown at all, I assume this is normal.

thank you for your information. I did some research after my post. I think apple do not show the status since 2015 MacBooks, but it still show it on desktop macs.

Thank you for replying this post. According to some internet information, the SMART status works on internal ssd. the ssd runs on PCIe slot will be recognised as a external ssd. I think install lilu can fix it.

I think install lilu can fix it.

Thanks for the recommendation, I appreciate it!
I installed Lilu long ago, and it works perfectly .

One thing I've noticed is that in MacsFanControl one can set to show SMART and NVMe Temps independently...

I have a 2015 27" iMac and the situation is the same, the SMART status is reported on the physical device only.

Hello. I found this forum in search and I have same message about Smart. I think it is when you look a snapshot of the volume in Disk Utility. Physical device is ok. But I see strange thing - I have A1419 with Fusion drive (yes, yes, lives last weeks) and put DriveDx app (very good thanx for that info) and SDD counter says 1500 hours but HDD counter says a bit over 10000h. How strange for me as these are part of one Fusion drive and working together , power on same time and with work time nearly 1 to 7. I bought machine at 2018 and used it rare for these 5 years. More likely usage is 10000h what is 13 months of none stop during 5 years, or 5 hours in a day
