Disk Verify Freezes my MBP

Hi,

I'm new to apple and I tried to install firefox 2.0, but it didnt install properly.
So I restarted the machine, and did a disk verify.
Then my machine got freezed ..! Is it normal disk verify take some long time to process ?

For my 3 day old Macbook pro 2.4 it is, it freezes for some time and then it starts working again, just leave it like that for a while.

Why does this happen? I don't know, maybe someone who knows a little bit more about the subject could tell us.

I've seen this happen before, if you run it on the startup disk.

Boot from another volume (OS-X restore disk, for instance), and run it from there. You would have to do this anyway, if problems were found, as you can only verify when run from startup disk.
