Just think about it, when you launch your Disney iPad applications you will get the enjoyment of sitting through 10 minutes of mandatory Disney advertisements that you must watch to use your Disney application!

Disney are a bunch of bastards and the sooner people realize it the better. Do American kids know that those Disney toys and clothes they love so much are made by other kids in sweatshops?

The Majority of goods Americans use are made in Chinese Sweatshops. Even our Beloved Apple computer products.

When people start seeing the apps that will be developed specifically for the iPad, their perception of the device is going to be drastically changed...

Totally agreed. Just the cal and contacts app they showed off when it was announced got me excited!

Watching a game the last thing I want is my greasy buffalo wing covered fingers manipulating a touch screen. 54 inch display to watch a game or a 10inch. too close to call

yes but can you take your 54inch TV to the bathroom?? this is the real question... its not meant to replace TV just make it portable..

If you think of it as a companion to whatever you're watching on the big screen the possibilities sound very intriguing.

For kids, it could be games and lessons that interact with the show, for sports it could be really in-depth live stats and instant replays... I feel like there is a ton of 'potential' there as they say.

I can see a Google Tablet having the camera, flash, Java, multitasking and still not selling as many as Apple.

Because their software ecosystem and UI is going to suck, like it currently does.

Anyone can do hardware and features (especially when there are Apple designs to copy), but software (and it's all about the software) is a different beast entirely.

Google has demonstrated that they don't quite understand the segments they are getting into. Nearly everything they out out software-wise works and feels like it's in beta.

Comments like this will drive the stock price back over $200. I am surprised that more companies have not publicly announced support for the device.

Agreed. Until the App Store one could argue the iPhone was just another phone. It's not a big iPod Touch. A year from now most of the naysayers will probably own an iPad.

You have that right. Sadly, there are those out there that whom bitch and wine where it is only a validation of ones effort. Just sample some of the crowd at MacWorld on Saturday and you will see what I'm talking about.

The iPad is going to allow a lot of things that is right now only in the heads and white boards of a handful of developers. This is going to be a fun one.

Now just trying to figure out how to get an iPad the day of its release without being schmuck waiting in line overnight. Phone calls to be made!

Other side

I can see a Google Tablet having the camera, flash, Java, multitasking and still not selling as many as Apple.

Inconsistent kernel implementation between licensees, runaway threads with no obvious force kill option, poor third party developer revenue channel, adult themed apps stigmatizing the platform and of course trans-wireless viruses!

Yeah, that screen is just so damned high quality. Apple has never made such a high quality display before! And it's just so crisp and clear! The 12" iBook and Powerbook have NOTHING on the iPad in terms of clarity.

Oh, wait...

But the interactivity that it will allow on a portable device with such a high quality screen is going to enable us to really start developing products that is different than the product that you typically see on an internet connected computer or on a television set.

What's the deal with the grammar in this sentence? I didn't even hear it out loud and it's making my ears hurt :D

I ain't tryin' a-be nitpicky ur nuthin', it's just that I luv products that is diff'ernt'n 'em 'ere other products.

:apple: Thank Differnt :apple:

I dont think that google is in it to create a great device and ecosystem. I think that want to create more gadgets accessing their mobile advertising so they can sell more space. They are not a device company, they are an advertising company and everything that they do is to drive those ends. My opinion.

Im looking forward to the future.
Gaming and Video tied in with the Internets interactivity will def make this an exciting product.

And now please tell us where ANY of this is NEW?

Today, I thought about sending my wife to an Apple store and letting her ask the sales people there if they would recommend the iPad for her. After all, she mainly needs a surf board and something to watch movies.

The fun part here is that she uses commercial websites that are based upon Java and Flash - and that need to PRINT, and that she watches DVDs.

Oddly enough, the iPad has no support for the most commonly used vehicle for video content: DVD. Also, it's impossible to use the iPad to print anything. Which is a real issue if you need to print address labels for Hermes or Deutsche Post deliveries. (Now the latter would also require a functioning Java implementation in your browser.)

Oops.

But we all already know that Apple and Disney have paid-for, one-time-use-only streaming content in mind when they re-invented Microsoft's Tablet PC concept.

By the way, Disney: Why the heck are Playboy, Hustler and Penthouse not excited about the iPad and the millions of ways it could allow them to generate more revenue? Right. It doesn't fit into the Disney idea of "we are all sexless cousins here".

But don't worry, there is a simple solution available: Just buy a Tablet PC with Microsoft Windows on it. It has all of the features that Apple's iPad has, but NONE of its limitations. Tablet PCs, or Slates as they are called nowadays, are real computers, not just oversized iPods.

Sure, there is a niche for gadgets like the iPad. But it certainly doesn't fill one that I have a need for.

And now please tell us where ANY of this is NEW?

Right, I'm not an expert at this market segment, but I'm sure in the year 2010 a person can buy a tablet form-factor device with a touch screen? No? If not, I'm really surprised. We've already got all the same tech in devices as small as a phone.

Ok...so the iPad (when it ships in late March 2010) will have a 1024x768 screen resolution...nowhere near 1080p.

That being said, why is Disney and others believing the iPad is a fantastic display device for movies/videos/games? Granted we (us board members) are aware of physical screen sizes for all devices such as iPods, laptop computers, LCD monitors...but 1024x768 is so 1995 as far as cutting edge video quality.

If the iPad were to ship with a much higher resolution, say 1600x1200, then I might classify it as a great display device...and yes, maybe Apple would have had to make the iPad slightly larger to accommodate those higher screen resolutions. With everything going 'HD' these days, I find it odd that Apple would release a gadget of this size with this screen resolution and attempt to market it as a killer video device in Q2 of 2010 when the resolution is barely above DVD and doesn't even match the watered down "HD" video content (meaning, not 1080p) that so many websites push.

Yeah, that screen is just so damned high quality. Apple has never made such a high quality display before! And it's just so crisp and clear! The 12" iBook and Powerbook have NOTHING on the iPad in terms of clarity.

Oh, wait...

Were either of those IPS displays? Really, I don't remember.

Yeah, yeah, yeah. We get it already! The iPad has great potential, most of which hasn't even been realized yet. What I wish people would realize is that many devices before it have had all this great potential and more often than not all the great ideas do not come to fruition.

ScoreCenter is one of my favorite apps on my iPhone but I'd hardly call it some great invention. It's just a portal to ESPN websites. I'm sure on the iPad they will add video highlights and call it a great interactive experience :/

You don't think having sports center essentially on demand on a reasonable portable device would be pretty cool?

Another one who doesn't get it.

It is okay the world needs to be mostly made up of lemming followers who have to be shown the way.

There is also rumors going around that is is an Enhanced-IPS display, a new technology (2009) that not only has increased viewing angles, but also delivers great power savings, possibly how apple is getting this supposed 10 hour battery life.

I think that the issue is more shape and not resolution. From a pixel perspective I think most will be impressed with that resolution on a screen of this sie. The question is how will it look as a video player given that you now have big black bars on both sides of the display? APple would probably argue that the trade off was made to accomodate more workspace for the device to act as a computer as opposed to a 16x9 ratio screen size. Since I think most people will use this more for things unrelated to video that the decision was appropriate.

For example, I would rather have more space to view my PDF's, play games or read books and tolerate the less sexy 4:3 (its close enough) ratio screen. Maybe in the future when the movie/television production companies get on board with apple's vision of the future they will release a video ipad. Until the content on itunes gets to a point where we can have a subscription consumption model, there is no reason to market this as a single purpose video device, but rather as a jack of all trades. And in that case, you are better of with a bigger workspace.
