If Disney+ did what TCM does, I'm interested.
Turner Classic Movies is a live channel, not on-demand.
They self-promote between movies.
Watch TCM is an app where you can watch live or on-demand streaming.
Some of us go way back to when The Disney Channel was a pay channel just like HBO.
I too would not pay for junk ads. I get plenty of that with MeTV.
Medicare Advantage, etc.
TCM (painfully) does not offer a streaming service.
The Watch TCM app requires credentials from cable, satellite, Hulu Live TV, or YouTube TV.
Hulu with live TV increased the cost recently by $5/month, but it now includes Disney+ and ESPN+.
It could make sense to offer a Disney+ Bundle where all 3 services had ads, not just Hulu.

You know where this is going.

We pay £7.99 a month now which is quite frankly nothing. It’ll be £13.99 a month within three years and the content will be garbage like a certain other streaming service and the ad supported version will be £7.99.

Get ‘em hooked and then empty their pockets like the crack pimps they are.

Why bother. Its $8 month or $80 a year ($6.66/month). All the Marvel content that was on Netflix has been removed and will be added to Disney + on March 16th.

Because then Disney can make more while offering a "cheaper version" Since users will be paying and they will get more $$ from ads.

I subscribe to 3 streaming services and I happily pay the ad-free price!
I subscribed to Disney+ for 1 month back in Dec when they had the special for $3.99 (I think), watched like 8 or 10 movies and then happily canceled, will do the same again if there are some new movies worth watching

I hope you don’t have young kids wanting that.

Bad enough years ago some kids would endlessly sing Frozen‘s theme song for hours out of a day. Now with ads, targeted ads, kids will hassle and whine at you for every single toy, shoes, and things they want to go with their favourite show/movie. Back to the 1980’s again here we go Marty.

What was wrong with the 80’s?! (I say while reminiscing about my transformers, He-Man, and complete set of The Real Ghostbusters toys…)

Holy cow thats a little hardcore for Disney. I hope it means they finally make a star wars show designed for kids over the age of 6.

Is this a good idea? In general, people don’t want ads, especially if they’re paying something (no matter how cheap). This will only nudge people to pirate as they end up thinking “why am I still seeing ads even after paying for this?” If they made it free with ads, that’s one thing. This model is what many Chinese OTTs are doing. But pay and ads?

One way it might work is if they set the price to be only marginally cheaper than the regular subscription, so people going into the service will immediately just pick the regular tier, thinking they’re not saving much money. So the ads tier is just there to upsell people to the regular price.

Paying for ads, imagine that, not far off the same model of the UK TV licensee although all the on-demand ad-supported services do not require one.
Huh… what? There are no ads on BBC TV (or radio) in the UK, which is funded by the license fee. It‘s more like Sky, where you pay a monthly fee and the majority of channels still have ads - although movies on the movie channels are shown without ad breaks.

Nooooooo. This is such a stupid, awful idea. Streaming services need to stop doing this. Hulu and HBO Max are the worst for doing this. Just make it one (inexpensive) fee, and make it have ZERO ads. That's what everybody wants. Paying money only to watch ads is archaic, illogical, and outright dumb.

I was just saying that it's crazy to pay for something and still get ads.

At least make it free if you want to bombard me with ads. :p

But I can see you what you're saying too.

It would be interesting to know, from a revenue standpoint, how much money these streaming services make from ads versus just collecting straight cash directly from subscribers.

There are quite a few streaming services that offer paid but ad-supported tiers... so the data must be out there.
If Pirate streaming site can survive on only ads, surly the big guys can as well.

The tv license in the uk is to pay for the bbc which is ad free…

Man, the lengths marketing scumbags will go through to squeeze another drop of value out of poor people. Anyone whose time is worth anything doesn't bother saving a couple dollars a month on ad-riddled streaming so this is just malice against those that don't have much, who conveniently are also the least likely group to do anything about it.

Yeah! Basically I'm wondering if they still pull that sort of crap.

Given the plethora of streaming services nowadays, we usually rotate our subscriptions every few months. We haven't yet subscribed to Disney+, but there are some things I'd be interested in watching... but there's nothing there that I absolutely need to see.
I've had Disney+ since it started, and I haven't been aware of any movies going away. It's possible there have been instances I've missed. But in the old "Disney Vault" days, they heavily advertised the "going away-ness" of things, and they're not doing that.

These days that mostly happens because of streaming rights contracts having expiration dates (which, I presume, is why those Marvel shows are moving from Netflix to Disney+).

About the "worst" they do in this regard is, their newer episodic shows (like Wandavision, Loki, Mandalorian, etc.) release an episode at a time, like traditional TV shows (and unlike some other streaming services) - this means if you want to subscribe for a month and binge a show, you have to wait until all the episodes land. Doesn't bother me, I watch them as they release. And I... kinda like that once-a-week format, gives you a little something extra to look forward to (also gives the production team more breathing room for finishing post-production on episodes).

Who ****** in your cornflakes this morning? They're offering (that is they're rumored to be planning to offer) a different pricing plan. Some people don't care as much about commercials and want to save some money. Some hate commercials and are willing to trade money for no commercials. Nobody is forcing anyone to subscribe to either plan. Disney+ is not a necessity of life.

Ha! You think that’s hardcore? In Canada, Disney+ has Pam and Tommy! We don’t have Hulu up here, so a lot of the Hulu content is put into a section called Star. That’s where all of the R rated content is, like Deadpool, Aliens, Predator, etc. Too many people think Disney+ is just for kids, but there’s a lot of grown up options too.
