thanks for this tip. that is incredibly helpful.

for most of the movies in question (that are remaining in HD and not getting upgraded to 4k), it indicates that i redeemed them via Movies Anywhere which is presumably the option i was offered when i redeemed the code from the discs. (Lion King, Big Hero 6) and the others, as i recalled correctly was Disney Movie Rewards.

The problem with digital copies is that the older ones (even from blu-rays which Disney later upgraded to HD through Movies Anywhere) were codes for iTunes redemptions in SD. These are not eligible for a free upgrade to 4K even though they port to iTunes in HD through Movies Anywhere.

Newer titles that included Digital HD only qualified if redeemed directly in iTunes. However, these were likely redeemed through Disney Movies Anywhere / Movies Anywhere so unless the code was redeemed directly in iTunes, the titles also weren't upgraded to 4K. This policy doesn't align with the statement that "existing HD owners get an automatic free upgrade to 4K HDR", but there is not much you can do about it. Apple Support is not helpful in resolving this and the studios are even worse if you try to contact them about your redemption code. You would think there would be a way to read whether redemptions were digital copies form MA since most people following the instructions on their blu-rays redeemed digital copies through DMA/MA.

yes, i have found in general Apple Support has not been helpful in other cases. for example, i got a free version of 4k Close Encounters of the Third Kind on Google Play when i bought my new tv a few years ago. it shows up as 4k on Movies Anywhere and Vudu, but it only gives me access to the HD version on iTunes.
