When the Apple TV launched, Disney sold (and continues to sell) a $100 Disney Infinity 3.0 Star Wars-themed bundle that included a Disney Infinity Base and controller designed to work with the Disney Infinity 3.0 game on the Apple TV, encouraging people to adopt Disney Infinity 3.0 on the set-top box.

At the time, Disney promised to bring the full Disney Infinity 3.0 Edition console experience to the device, but it appears Disney is reneging on that promise, abandoning development of Disney Infinity 3.0 on the Apple TV.

According to a recent customer service response shared by our sister site TouchArcade, Disney currently has no plans to update the Apple TV version of the Disney Infinity 3.0 app. The response was given to a customer who asked if new Disney Infinity figures would work with the Apple TV.

The team is currently focusing on the traditional gaming platforms. We are always evaluating and making changes, but there are currently no plans for futher updates to the Apple TV version of the game. Please keep an eye out for further news about this, and feel free to contact Support if you have any questions.
Disney Infinity enthusiasts who use the Apple TV app are understandably upset about Disney's decision not to update the game after just four months, as it means development has effectively come to a halt and no new characters will be supported, including new Marvel Battleground figures which some people purchased before learning of the incompatibility issue. It also means Disney has no plans to fix bugs that are currently affecting the tvOS app.

As TouchArcade points out, Disney may have made this decision due to poor app sales and revenue generation on the Apple TV. Games and apps have not proven to be as popular on the new platform as they are on iOS, with some popular Apple TV games even bringing in less than $100 per day.

Disney has updated its Disney Infinity website with a new disclaimer noting not all content is available for PC, Steam, iPhone, iPad, Windows, Amazon, Google Play, and Apple TV. The latest Marvel Battlegrounds figures are compatible only with PlayStation 3 and 4, Wii U, Xbox One, and Xbox 360.

so the point about poor apple tv sales would only make sense if they were only dropping only apple tv updates, not PC + iOS etc

I'm not surprised. Apple TV apps aren't selling because Apple TVs aren't selling. It's another huge product misfire, along with the Apple Watch. The track record for new products post-Jobs is not looking very good.

This is perhaps indicative of many who are in the same situation I'm in:
I bought an Xbox for gaming. I have an AppleTV 4 for Netflix. Why would I want to game with that limited Siri Remote when I can get a dedicated gaming experience on my Xbox/PS4/WiiU?

Apple doesn't provide sales figures specifically for the Apple TV. Anyway, I bet it's selling terribly. And I never, ever hear any buzz about it. People are not buying it in droves.

Kind of like how I rarely see Apple Watches in the wild, or hear any buzz about them. You can tell when a product lands with a thud.

If you're making a comparison to Apple Watches then the Apple TV would be selling tremendously well for its market (given that Apple, according to analysts, had 75% of the market last year and the product category that includes the watch is generating notibly more revenue even as iPods and accessories shrink) "buzz" or no.

So in other words, you are making up nonsense based on nothing. I never see more than one or two Android devices a month, therefore they don't sell any.

For the record, Apple already said that the holiday quarter Apple TV sales were the best ever and doubled the number of sales for the year thus far.

As for the Apple Watch, most analysts agree that Apple sold between 12 million and 14 million units in 2015, and this estimate is supported by the rise in income from the division that includes the Apple Watch. Not bad for six months of actual availability, I'd say.

The truth of the matter is that Apple's worst-selling product beats nearly all other companies' best selling product unless you go by the name of Google or Samsung. Apple TV and Apple Watch don't sell on the scale of the iPhone, certainly, but they were never designed to. They were designed to be successful and the market leader, and in both cases they are.

You might not want to, but imagine a scenario where you have a family including children, and they'd like to play the Disney Infinity Game while you use your traditional console simultaneously.

Perhaps that's because people are getting on and using these products, instead of making sure you personally know how great they are?

The market for smartwatches and media devices isn't anywhere near the size of the phone market, or even tablet market. Nobody should have been expecting either the Apple TV or Apple Watch to sell anywhere near as well as either the iPhone or iPad. The Apple TV and Apple Watch are doing fine, and will probably do even better in their next incarnations.

Maybe I'm just in a bubble, I know lots of people with AppleTVs.

I do completely understand why games aren't selling. The remote is not even kind of a good controller for games.
It feels like you're hacking the device when you play a game... definitely doing something it wasn't designed for.

I love my AppleTV and play many games on it, many friend have it already or planning to get it soon. Sure it is a new products and the choice to force debts to support Siri remote limits gaming but AppleTV is far from a flop.

Really? I see Android devices everywhere. A little less than 40% of smartphones I see around campus.
The market for smartwatches and media devices isn't anywhere near the size of the phone market

It wouldn't hurt anyone if they (Disney) gave people who bought the bundle either a free copy of the software for another console of their choice or a partial refund - if they were upset enough to care they probably plan on buying more figures or game expansions after all.

I do completely understand why games aren't selling. The remote is not even kind of a good controller for games.
It feels like you're hacking the device when you play a game... definitely doing something it wasn't designed for.

If only Apple sold a traditional controller and didn't depend on third party companies to provide controllers, which often have incomplete support/compatibility. A gaming controller from the source blessed with full support would be a godsend.

I think you misunderstood his point. It's not whether or not Android is popular (we all know that about 80% of phones are Android). His point was that you can't make a judgement based on how many you personally happen to 'see around'. He's suggesting that you can't reliably analyse the Apple Watch market based on how many you have 'seen around'.

I remember people saying that the iPhone was certainly flopping because they NEVER saw people using iPhones on the bus in San Francisco. They reported seeing more Windows Mobile devices than iPhones, more Blackberry phones than iPhones, and took this as evidence that the iPhone was failing to gain traction. This was about 1 year into the life of the iPhone, roughly where we are today with the Apple Watch.....

The reason your analysis doesn't work is because the sample size is ludicrously small (geographically and demographically). It would be like predicting a general election based on people in your neighbourhood. There's a pretty good chance you would be way, way off target. That's how come people wind up convinced that the election has been 'fixed'. Well, the world is a big place.....

Keep in mind that the iPad's popularity didn't really explode until the iPad 2. The iPhone 3G is where iPhone sales really took off. The Apple TV has never been a hugely popular device (even under Jobs), and the Apple Watch is still a 1st gen product. Having this discussion a year from now would be much more fruitful.

I don't think this indicates sales of ATV4 being bad at all, rather how bad of an idea bringing Infinity to the ATV actually was. Seriously, did they really think this was going to catch on?

Apple TV's already have a relatively small market (no, I'm not saying it's a "flop"), and then you narrow it down even further since it only works on the 4th gen, and then you need both Apple TV and Infinity fans. So the target market for this is going to be:

Someone who is interested in ATV.
Someone who is interested in ATV4 specifically.
Someone who is interested in both ATV4 and Infinity.
Someone who is interested in both ATV4 and Infinity AND doesn't already own it or want it for a different platform.

Seemed very obvious from the beginning.

I own the new Apple TV. It's fine, but hardly innovative or exciting. As for Apple Watch, I tried one out but returned it. Again, just nothing to get excited about.

Care to back up this statement with some facts? How do you know the sales figures of Apple TV 4s? Do you work for Apple?

Disney Infinity for Apple TV is a free app. You can either buy digital characters, levels and power ups or you can connect the Bluetooth base and use the physical Play sets. Or you can do both. It seems like the digital codes you get that work for PC, don't transfer to the Apple TV even after connecting your Disney Account.

The starter pack is more expensive for ATV and contains the same characters and level you get on other platforms. Plus the Logitech controller and the Bluetooth base.

The biggest problem is the starter pack. It's possible there's a large ATV audience that will already own Disney Inifinty 3.0 for another platform. The ATV will just enable another way to access the game. People don't want to buy a starter pack with characters and a level that they already own.

If Disney would release the base as a standalone, it's possible more people would be playing the game on ATV. Apple is in good standing with Disney, so it would be good for both to agree on exclusive characters and/or power ups for the ATV.

$99 is likely pushing people away. The ATV is not a premium platform. Change the game to be Pay-Once of $15-20 and sell the base and/or exclusive bundle. That might do it.


If they really want to stop support then that sucks. Disney Inifinity runs well on our system and we would play it a lot if we could just get the base. It's a showcase game for how close ATV can come to the console gaming experience.

Too bad Apple enforces remote control support. Maybe removing that restriction and properly notifyin customers about controller-only games would also change Disney's minds...

[edit] the play set from the starter pack goes for $35 at retail. If it was $ to $, then a controller + Bluetooth base combo would cost around $65.

Also; it's possible the cheaper PS Vita base will work, but it only has a spot for one character.

DI comes with a Steel Series remote for ATV. The performance of DI3.0 on ATV is broadly equal to that of the WiiU.

I believe the PS3/4 base works with the ATV. The inverse is certainly true: you can use an ATV base with a PS3/4.
