Users of Disney's Movies Anywhere service will now be able to access their movies between iOS and Android as a part of an agreement between Apple and Google, reports The Wall Street Journal.

The company launched its Movies Anywhere app on iOS in February, which allowed users purchase movies or link their iTunes account to sync eligible films to watch on all of their iOS devices. Now, the Movies Anywhere app is available on Android, as users will be able to purchase movies on the service and view any eligible film bought from the iTunes Store or Google Play on their iOS or Android devices. Disney is also allowing users to redeem codes from DVDs and Blu-ray Discs on the Movies Anywhere website.

According to the report, both Apple and Google will pay Disney a wholesale rate for each copy of a film that they sell. Disney Movies Anywhere is currently offering a free digital copy of Wreck-It Ralph with a newly connected account, and currently offers a library of over 450 titles to choose from.

Disney Movies Anywhere is a free app for iOS devices and can be downloaded through the App Store. [Direct Link]

Also all your Disney movies in iTunes get upped to hd with iTunes extras

This will be a lifesaver since the only thing that calms my girls down on long trips is the music from Frozen. The extra have a specific section just for the songs.

This is GREAT for the Consumer!!

Man, I wish I waited until now. I got the Incredibles FREE...it could have been Wreck-It Ralph.

The extras are great, BUT keep in mind the new, awesome version of iTunes Extras (unlike the old, cruddy SD versions) only stream — you can't download them, unfortunately. So using them on the road like that would require data, and probably a lot of it. Hopefully that isn't a problem for you (most people have more data than me, anyway, heh), but just in case, I thought I'd mention it... (sorry to rain on your parade!)

that stinks. I didn't think about that. (wife and I share a 2GB plan)

Connect a Google Play account and you will also get Wreck-It Ralph.

hmmm, maybe I will set up a Google Play Account just for that.
thanks

A nice feature for sure but those with limited data, streaming is basically a short-lived feature.

Linking my work Google Account worked for me to get Wreck It Ralph!

Thanks a bunch...and able to download via iTunes to check there too.

This is great. I hope they can come to more agreements like this. Hopefully this will kill that streaming-and-app-only "UltraViolet" service, and convince them to convert to downloads.

I signed up for a new Disney Movies Anywhere account, and linked my iTunes and Google Play accounts. I now see the Disney Movie I bought on iTunes, and the two Disney movies I used the DVD/Blu-ray iTunes download code on - on my Android tablet! (Plus Wreck-It Ralph.)

The two that were DVD/Blu-ray download codes appear to have *NOT* been upgraded to HD or iTunes Extras, but I'll check again on my desktop computer in iTunes when I get home - I just know it doesn't display on my iPhone.

The copy my Android tablet is downloading is SD, though. Only 600 MB.

Also of note: Only the "full length movies" appear to have synced. I also have bought a few Disney and Pixar shorts from iTunes, and none of them have become available on my Android device, or on the Disney Movies Anywhere website. But, I don't see them listed for purchase on the DMA website, either.

It's funny, a few hours before this article was published I went to redeem some Disney digital copies and was confused by this whole thing. I wanted to make sure I was getting them in iTunes and not some strange disney app only. It turned out to be a pretty nice deal as it ported all of my older digital copies into the Disney site as well. Hopefully they are now HD as someone mentioned earlier in the thread, I'll have to check.

Time that Apple or Google or Disney buy Sony, so we could enjoy that also in Japan. Ah, and buy Fox too, I want to to see the Simpsons.

Really, those regional protectionism is something we should have left in the last millennium.

US only

Like itunes radio. Over a year later and lots of talk, still not in the UK.

Personally don't see all the fuss about Disney anywhere. Just like ultraviolet 3rd party cloud lockers are a pain, temperamental and buggy.

When is itunes finally going to release iTunes Match for movies.

And also if you buy most of your content like movies from iTunes how is this Disney anywhere any different from downloading your purchased movies again?

How does this work?
I only had one other Disney movie in my iTunes library, but as far as I can tell, it did not get upped to HD. Obviously the copy I already have downloaded didn't change, but when I go to my Purchased tab in the iTunes store, it still just shows the SD version.

I assume he means when you link you iTunes account to disney anywhere cloud locker it puts a HD version of that movie you bought on iTunes into your disney locker.

Look at your movies in the cloud

in the Disney app or in iTunes? the only Disney movie i had was Monsters University, and it still is only showing the SD version under my iTunes Purchased tab in the iTunes store. both on my Mac and on the iPhone.

If you sync your DMA account with your iTunes account, it'll put all your Disney movies in iTunes and also upgrade them to HD.

I think I had to delete my local copies to then (re) download from the cloud as HD.

--though all my Digital Copies were from BluRay packages, not sure if that matters if they DC were originally from a DVD.

Well, Comcast TV was out last night, I didn't feel like pulling out a BluRay and just threw on Wreck It Ralph. how awesome!
