when I activate 'application windows' of mission control via ctrl-arrowdown, for example,
libreoffice shows me all the open files and in the center of each file, it displays the filename.

for some reason, this works on one mac, but not on another, i.e. the filenames are not displayed.

anybody got a clue how to activate this useful feature?
thank you.

Just to clarify, are you saying you want all the filenames to be displayed at once or just as you hover over each window? Because the latter is the way it works for me (filename only displays if I move my mouse cursor over that particular window).

to be displayed as you hover over each window

like I said, this works on one system, but not on another, same macos12, same application software version

there must be a way to (de)activate this, no?

Maybe on one Mac "Group windows by application" (or something like that) is activated? You find it in "System Preferences" under "Mission Control".

I think @Mr.Blacky has the answer. Under System Preferences > Mission Control, the third checkbox down is "Group windows by application". Once I selected that option, only the application names would show when you hover over the groups of windows - no filenames would show. So I'm guessing this option must be selected on that other Mac.

So now I'm wondering if there is a best of both worlds? Is there a way to have window grouped by application and then press another key when you're hovering over a window group to split that group into individual windows with file names?

yess!! this is it, thank you, thank you mr blacky!!!
not that I would understand why this is so, though... 🙃

If you just switch windows in between the same app, you can use "App Expose". It shows all windows of an app with the name underneath and you can even switch to other apps via the dock, while still in App Expose.
