So I've tried a few things on this but none seem to have worked.

My iMac is set to sleep it's display after a minute (Late 2012 iMac on 10.11.2, admittedly updating now to see if it helps...)

I've done disk permissions, Pram and SMC resets but to no avail, it just seems to have had one too many expresso today....anyone got any ideas?

It appears you've done the right things to try to correct the problem. The only other thing I can suggest is to open your Activity Monitor and try to see what might be keeping the iMac from sleeping. Sometimes it can be a background task running or something that you're not aware of. One thing you can try is to startup your iMac in Safe Mode and see if it will sleep. (Safe Mode stops all third party startup apps and kernel tasks from running.)
