I just hooked up my new Dell u2713hm monitor and using mini display port to display port for hook up.

It shows an audio source:

As you can see as well, it says it has no input controls and if I hit the volume the HUD comes up but with the mute symbol.

Did some google searching to no avail. Any suggestions?

Just a hunch, did you try to do a restart, normally you should not have to but give it a try.
I've seen it on my Mac but only after fiddling with some extensions.

You never said what mac you have. I think the MPB6,1 was the first that had sound wired to the display port. I have no idea about iMacs.

same issue—solved!

I have a mid-2013 MPRr and am using a Startech mDP-DP cable as well as the USB cable to the monitor (no idea if this makes any difference). I had the same experience as you—my sound settings screen looks the same as yours and after reading your post I was disheartened. But I read elsewhere that the audio should be carried through the mDP cable, and so I went back to the settings and clicked on the left speaker image, then the right speaker, and it worked!

I cannot control the volume with the keyboard—that's what the knob on the Dell sound bar is for.

PS: I'm assuming you're using the Dell accessory sound bar, since that audio port isn't supposed to be used for anything else, apparently. If you're not using it, I picked one up for $15 on eBay; it's part number AX510. Because I found one for less, I bought the AX510PA which is exactly the same but has a power adapter included (that's not needed with the u2713hm).

Hope this helps!

Old post but someone might benefit from the solution: so far there are not "solutions" but only a workaround: Soundflower or Syphon

I'm using Syphon on Yosemite because I read that Soundflower is distorting sound on it, but I'm not completely happy either:

  • the volume scales strangely (100% volume is not much higher than 50%)
  • sometimes I have to re-set Syphon after sleep or else I won't hear anything
  • if I unplug my monitor, OS X won't redirect the audio to its internal speakers
