I recently replaced a 12" monitor on a Mac LC series with a 14" PC monitor. I used an adapter purchased from ebay which is very similar to the one that can be bought at Griffin technologies. The picture displays perfectly and you can see all 4 edges of the desktop. The problem is that when you try and run a program or open a new window, it's size is physically too large to fit within the confines of the desktop. I don't really understand this as the desktop fits on the screen very well.

Loads of people have replaced their old mac monitors so I'm guessing I'm not the first person to have come across this.

I don't know any of this Mac's specifications unfortunately except that it's defiantly and LC series, which number I'm not sure but it's the one with the low profile case and a separate monitor as opposed to an integrated one. I believe it was made around 1993-1994 and has not been upgraded (software or hardware) so the o/s and hardware specification should be the same as when it left the factory.

Any ideas?

Is this a problem isolated to a single application or do ALL applications cause the same problem? For example, if you open up a new folder in the finder, does the size balloon up to fill up the screen, past the edges?

If it's a single application, try trashing the preference file under system folder/preferences. Otherwise, try rebuilding the desktop (command-option at startup, after the "Welcome to MacOS" splash screen and after all extensions have loaded before dropping into the finder) or resetting PRAM may help.

If not, you may have to get creative with the monitors control panel (not sure if this existed pre system 7.0, though...can't remember).

I will try all the things you mentioned next Tuesday, I'm 25 miles away from the mac at the moment. In the meantime to answer some of your questions
I noticed that some of the desktop items like the trash can were only 50% visible, the rest of the icon having disappeared of the right hand side of the screen. So I think it's a general problem as opposed to an application specific one. Not every window bloats past the screen edges. Small windows, drop down menus etc fit although "Ted" who owns the machine says they are larger than before. If your suggestions don't work I'll be sure to obtain all the system details on Tuesday so I can more accurately describe the problem.

I'm certain it's an easy fix, but i'd never even touched a Mac before last Sunday so it's all new to me!
