Hi Guys,
since a year I am using the MacBook Pro 15'.

I am used to having a monitor, however I gave up using mine - 22 inch Samsung Full HD, because of the poor resolution.

Contrary to many of you, I am not doing any video editing, nor playing with photos.

99% using Office, Mail and Safari. Very seldom inDesign.

Therefore my question is where to go with display.
27 inch Ultrafine 5k, despite it's price, seems very big. Ultrafine 4K is more reasonable but can't charge my laptop.

I've read about Dell 24' 4k display but that demands dongles from Display Port.

Is the Ultrafine 4K still a good choice? Should I splurge for the 5K? Are there any other models that you recommend?

I could go for Samsung 27 inch, but I've read that I should run it in scalling mode, that would ruin retina.

I would much appreciate your answers.

BR,
Maciej.

First -- don't worry about the "charging the MacBook" part.
Instead, just get a display "that's a good display" (whether it has charging capabilities or not).
Do the charging "the old fashioned way" -- with a USB-c cable connected to a wall charger.

I'd suggest a 4k display, 27" size.

A good place to start looking:
Comprehensive List of S-IPS/H-IPS/e-IPS and other IPS Based LCD Monitors

Thank you. My only doubt is that text and icons would be too big in default 4k resolution on 27' and when called it's blurry.

One last question concerning Ultrafine 4K real estate..

It's 4K but using Retina, therefore the real-estate is the same as 1920x1080, correct?
My 15' MacBook Pro has 2880 x 1800. Would all be bigger on Ultrafine 4K screen?

You can change the scaling used from the settings on your Mac. So you could decide to have the full real estate of 4k or scale things if everything is too small. Don't worry about this, you can figure it out once you get the screen.

I'm using the LG ultrafine 4k with my tbMBP 15 ... battery hasn't dropped below 100%. Setting it to 'more space' is my preferred resolution.

Thank you. So you do not have any issues with blurry text etc?

Not really, no. Very occasionally (only in Word running in Parallels) I've noticed it, but at normal viewing distances it looks fantastic. I've not noticed it on any native mac apps either.

So I guess my answer is - with anything that gets touted as a 'major issue' on these forums, if you look hard enough for an issue, you'll find one. For people who just want to have a great monitor that matches their laptop display, it's awesome.

If you do not want to buy an expensive thunderbolt 3 display, you must use either dongle or dock to convert to displayport or HDMI. My experience with two Dell 4K monitors are great so far. Both are connectedt to Caldigit Thunderbolt 3 Dock. one with dongle and one is to the displayport on the dock. no flickering.

Love the concept of not wanting to pay for 'expensive' thunderbolt 3 display (or USB-C, as the 4k one is) ... but happy to drop 300 quid on a TB3 dock.
