I recently sent my 2018 MBP 15 inch retina in to Apple for repair due to an issue with the display. I have realized now that there is data that would be unrecoverable if Apple were to wipe the drive (something I unfortunately glossed over when they explained my data could be deleted). I'm wondering the likelihood of my device being wiped due to a display issue. Currently chatting with Apple to see if there is any recourse, but maybe some anecdotal stories can calm my worries.

Any takers?

Most likely they will wipe the data. Apple usually refreshes the OS in order to ensure it is not a driver or install issue. After a new display installation, and to ensure proper driver recognition, they might always do an OS refresh.

It's hard to tell, but my personal opinion is that you prepare yourself for data loss.

That said, call Apple and check if you could get a note on your case about data. Perhaps they could help you out backing it up on site. It never hurts to ask.

That does sound like something they would try before attempting to replace it entirely.

I was able to get an escalation to cancel the repair. It was brought in at 6pm on a Saturday evening, apparently reached the depot this morning. Crossing my fingers here that they can get it back to me without wiping it.

It would be worth taking a few dollars with you and getting an external hard drive to use for backups too.
