Display Shows Multi Colored Lines

MacBook Pro 17"
Display shows multi colored lines vertically
no change when display is moved or twisted.

When I hook up an external monitor HDMI I can
only get a grey empty screen.

Does anybody know a fix for this?

Does anybody know how I can get my external
monitor to display my main screen so I can use
my computer?
