I'm considering buying a 13" MacBook Pro and want to use it as a desktop with an external display... I'm looking at this Dell,

My question is around DisplayPort ... does that also carry the signal of USB? For instance, can I plug in an external keyboard and (USB) speakers to the display, and then connect the display to the MBP via DisplayPort, having just one cable between the two, and use the keyboard, etc.? Or does it not work that way?

If you're plugging them into the display itself, then the display should have a separate usb cable that would connect to one of your ports on the macbook to carry any usb connections from the display to the macbook

This will only work with a thunderbolt connected monitor, display ports and the associated cables won't do this. The only one currently available is the now old apple thunderbolt display, this si not what you want.

You could go with a thunderbolt dock solution.
