This is our mayor. He says he's a busy guy. :D same mayor who smoked crack while in office.

What really gets to me are those distracted drive at left turn lanes don't notice when the quick left turn light turns green! Sometimes no amount of honking can get to this person to turn.

I love cars. I love to drive. I am terrified half the time on my short commutes that some dimwit is going to be on their cellphone and decide to change lanes. It's getting horrible.

I'm trying to figure out what issue will be fixed by making hybrids illegal.:confused:

That was a joke. But while we're at it, lets turn it into more a joke.

Banning automatics would keep people to stupid to drive a manual transmission off the road, driving a manual makes you pay attention more. And Banning hybrids is good, because hybrids are garbage.

Driving tests should be done in manual transmission.

For me, it would take an already perfectly-good driver and make him do more work. I don't drive an automatic because I'm too stupid to drive a manual. I drive an automatic because constantly shifting and using the clutch in the stop-and-go traffic of Atlanta sucks donkey balls. And, well, because I just don't want to drive a manual.

EDIT: I should say that I think driving a manual should be a requirement for getting a license.

ive had some very close misses due to myself texting while i was driving. i even tried using my iPad while driving but that was way too much, you need two hands to use it.

This would require the government to provide such a vehicle for the 90% of drivers who do not own one. (give or take 9%) That would mean your vehicle taxes would go up. Great suggestion! ;)

Unfounrty that will more than likely not happen in our lifetime.

One way to fix some issues is to make automatic transmissions and hybrids illegal.

If that isn't one of the silliest solutions I've ever heard since we all know that drivers with standard transmissions never text, eat, apply makeup, read or any of the other things that the evil automatic transmission drivers do.

Of course it's not a perfect solution, but it would be at least a deterrent. Driving stick requires at least some basic level of connectedness with the car - it forces you to be more aware and more attentive. Any schmuck who can drive a go-cart can drive an automatic.

That said, it's not a practical solution on the whole, but if it were possible I think it would help. :)

Yep absolutely. As I was getting on the interstate this morning there were two people in front of me, who were driving like they were half asleep. Finally got up to where the on-ramp ends, they're both still going well under the speed limit, and the guy in front of me isn't trying to pass the guy in front of him. Finally I get to pass them, BOTH on their cell phones, not at care in the world. Annoys the hell out of me.

I couldn't find the more focused thread on texting while driving, but I heard an interesting report on the topic today.

3 young adults
a behind the wheel driving simulator
smart phone
beer

First test, "drive" while texting.
Second test, drink enough beer to be over the legal limit, then "drive".

Not surprisingly, all three focused on the simulator better while drunk without a phone to distract them. The time it took to "crash" or "run off the road" or just "cross the center line" was 50% less with the phone than the failed alcohol test.

It's pretty easy to drive after a few drinks, you can keep your hands on the wheel and eyes on the road. I feel texting while driving is ridiculous because you need to use a hand (or two) and your eyes. Though it was easier when I had my Motorola fliphones because I knew where all the physical keys were so I could send entire texts without having to look at the phone. On my iPhone, I only ever text when at a red light if that even.

Depending upon what is meant by "a few drinks", alcohol, among many other effects, causes disinhibition and impaired judgement, as well as alterations in perception and reaction time.

While I am in full agreement that driving and manual texting is obviously dangerous (the issue of hands free conversation and it's negative effect on concentration has also received research attention), a casual attitude toward any drinking and driving is risky.

I don't recommend it, however, I'd be surprised if those with a higher tolerance would have an issue if they had a few beers at a bar over a couple of hours.

Of course, it's always better to have no impairment or distractions when driving.

No. Manual drivers just do these things better :p

Agreed. Driving after you have been drinking is just a bad idea.

+1.

Might hold true for city driving, but if you're on the highway moving steadily and in the highest gear, your hands are free to do all the stupid stuff automatic drivers can do.
