I don't get to work from home, so my Mac Pro has fallen into a state of disuse. I'll probably do the same thing. Hopefully I can find a buyer :)

Right now I'm running my MBP like this, but since I bought the MBA the MBP never moves. Gotta agree with Shownarou on this one. With a notebook, just having the option of portability is always nice though.

Just like the title... should I sell my Mac Pro Quad Core with 5GB of RAM and nVidia 8800 GT 512MB and get a new MacBook Pro when Apple refreshes the MacBook line... or should I keep the Mac Pro and stick with a desktop. The thing about my Desktop is sometimes I don't like sitting at my desk... I wanna go lay in bed and use the computer but, I can't. I have an iPhone and that somewhat helps, but it gets very tiring fast trying to squint at that little screen and scroll and pinch my way around everywhere. Not to mention, the iPhone is only Wireless b/g compatible whereas the MacBook Pro has Wireless N capabilities.

What do you all think? Anyone else here thinking about switching to a notebook Mac?

Edit: Holy crap! I just noticed that it said "Nov. 14th" in the title when I meant Oct. 14th. Oops.. Fixed.

I think if you require portability then get a MBP; if you require power, then stick with your MP.

depending on what you use the mac pro for you may want to keep it for power and upgradeability reasons. maybe purchase a cheap macbook to fulfill your portability needs.

Makes me laugh!

Sounds to me you just want an new computer and your pathetic excuses are just to convince yourself you need it.

Forums are great therapy, especially gear related ones in supporting unnecessary purchases.

Gadgets are like beautiful women....... Us guys (and some girls) just can't resist them.

I also believe that OP is just looking for another excuse to buy new computer, and after his last post I think that he needs new way to show off...

I was thinking about getting a Second Gen MacBook Air. What do you all think?

Unless you travel alot that the weight difference is really important, just get a MacBook, you'll get more for your money.

Get a MacBook, use that to iChat, web surf, all that. Keep your Mac Pro for those times you want to photo edit, video edit, play games, etc (and when you want to do those things and really don't want to sit at your desk, you can do them from your MB and trade off relaxing elsewhere for speed).

Just as an update. I did take your suggestions and juggled them around in my head for a while. I've been thinking a lot and I realized that I don't need or want a notebook Mac. I have my Mac Pro for my main computer and my iPhone for my mobility. Some of you were right... if I ever did get a laptop, I'd only get it to compliment my desktop... not replace it.

Thank you all for your help on helping me decide. I think it was one of those spur of the moment type of ideas when suddenly I felt like I needed a laptop... heh. I straightened myself out though.

I wouldnt dream of buying a Macbook pro when you can get a Mac pro for the same price with so much more power and expandability.

if you want portability get a Eee PC

Heres my setup and ill be buying a Eee PC next.

Wow, that's a really nice desk for audio production. The monitors must be just the right height to listen correctly. The screen is a bit high for my tastes though. I'm glad I'm sticking with my Mac Pro... man, I love this thing.

To TheSpaz, I also bought a Mac Pro recently and really thought about swapping it for a MBP since I hardly used the power. More work came my way and now I don't know how I'd do without it: I run at least three virtual machines at any given time, do video editing and use Lightroom. However, I was fortunate enough to get a MBP a few months back and a MSI Wind which work provided. As it happened, the MSI Wind is apparently the best notebook out there for installing OS X on and considering its size and price the smallest and cheapest too.

I'm not one to waste time on tinkering with software/hardware but the little MSI was a piece of cake to setup, and is so small and powerful enough that I hardly use the MBP anymore.

If you can afford the $500 a MSI Wind costs and a few hours installing OS X on it I'd heartily recommend it.

The thing is, when my MBP was new I didn't have another notebook and I needed something portable. Then I got my MBA and the MBP's been siting at home ever since.
