I'm thinking about taking my 1TB internal SATA drive out of my iMac and setting up a 4TB raid. My plan is to swap the 1TB drive out for a 2TB, then swap out the CD/DVD drive for another 2TB.

Is this all I would need?
    2x 2TB 3.5 SATA Drives
    1 Optical Hard Drive Bay

How exactly would the raid process work? I want to set the drives up so my iMac drive says it's 4GB (or you know, about 4GB) on a single drive.

Can I do that with software (ie disk utility) or do I need some kind of hardware solution? I don't think I've ever built a raid.

Sorry to break it to you but you cannot install a 3.5 in harddrive in the cd slot. The people installing drives in this location are using SSD or laptop sized drives. The current 1 and 2TB drives on the market will not fit in this slot no matter what you do.

That's true. You can still install 1TB 2.5" SATA drive but there is no 2TB that fits there. You can RAID them with Disk Utility

the reason I didn't say that a 1TB existed is because they are near impossible to find because WD thinks its fun messing with us =(

Not without duct-taping an external drive to the back of the computer housing :D

Posters above have already stated there are no 2tb drives that will fit in the iMac. You'd have to do 1tb internal/1tb in optibay, and 2 tb external.

are you serious?....... of course you can put a 2tb in the imac it has to go in the center where the stock one is. if you check apples site you will see that. when giving advice make sure you know what you are talking about! the 2tb upgrade has to match whatever stock hd came in the imac so the fan will spin properly. :)

You can have one 2TB HD because iMacs use 3.5" HDs, Apple even offers 2TB for iMac. SuperDrive is 2.5" so 1TB is maximum you can have there atm, giving the total of 3TB internally
