After months of brainstorming, I finally found the perfect solution!

These little guys are simple MagSafe compatible magnetic plates. Extremely thin. They're designed to convert a non-MagSafe case into a MagSafe case, but they double as DIY MagSafe accessories.

One side is a smooth side and one side is a sticky side. I simply peeled the sticky layer off completely, making the magnetic plate even thinner. Then, I stuck my Ohsnap magnet onto the plate itself, and voila. I now have a MagSafe compatible Ohsnap grip that I can pop on when I'm lazing on the couch / in bed, but take off when I'm on the go and would rather carry my wallet. I imagine you can do the same thing with a PopSocket, a wallet, literally anything you want to stick to your phone. I didn't take any pictures of the in-the-making process, but here's the finished product:

This is similar but better IMHO because it doesn't have a sticky side. If using MagSafe, we don’t need a sticky side. https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/ohsnap-grip-stand.2264528/post-29490304
Oh nice! Yeah they're similar products, as you said that's a pure magnet with no sticky side so more appropriate, but these were two for the price of one and Choetech is a brand from which I've purchased before so I trusted them.

Glad to see we had the same exact thoughts hahaha

Did you bypass the ohsnap steel ring? Just glue the actual ohsnap grip to the plate? maybe that’s a thinner setup. oh and is the ohsnap grip slightly larger in diameter than the Cheotech? And the stand function works right? I think the steel ring raises the grip up to allow for the grip to fit in when in stand mode. Thanks for the info!

The sticky side of the Choetech plate is the side that sticks magnetically to the phone and case because of the polarity of the magnets, so I peeled it off and attached the Ohsnap magnetic ring to the nonsticky side.

what about the size, any difference? with my solution the steel ring overlaps slightly. But the strength of the connection is so good that when I pull up on the grip like in your video, the grip itself detaches from the steel ring and the metal base stays on my 12 Pro.

The size is practically identical. Honestly you can't even tell this is something I MacGyvered, it looks legit. Or maybe that's just because I'm like 4 glasses of champagne deep celebrating Joe and Kamala lol

Hey man. Any chance you know which cheotech you got? Amazon currently doesn’t sell them anymore (unless you have a new link you can share). Cheotech has 2 different magnetic plates for sale on their website. One for $19.99 and the other for $14.99.

(I would gladly buy your spare if you have it)

I'm looking for it too, I really like my car mount, sadly it doesn't support magsafe. thinking I can adhere it to my car mount and make a DIY magsafe car mount.

I found this one (1st link below) It works. Just peel the layer that has the sticky goo. Literally tear that layer off. There’s another layer below. Probably the same brand or both brands got it from the same manufacturer.

I recently purchased a mophie MagSafe battery pack. And the ring that’s included in there also magnetizes itself strong to my phone. Sticky side as well. You would have to remove the sticky side of that ring as well

Old post but can your phone still charge wirelessly with this version of the ohsnap set up or is that only the 2.0?

with my setup detailed above with the original grip, you just slide it off the phone and charge wirelessly as normal. there was nothing permanently affixed to the phone. ver 2.0 is MagSafe compatible. so when you want to charge wirelessly you just slide it off. This being true with a MagSafe case or phone. i never installed their metal ring so if you do, i don’t know how charging will be.
