DJI today announced the launch of the Mavic Pro, its latest and smallest drone. The DJI Mavic Pro is designed to be compact, folding down to be put in a bag so it can be used anywhere.

When its four arms are folded and the propellers tucked away against its body, the Mavic Pro is "practically the size of a water bottle," making it more portable than most drones. Despite its small size, the Mavic Pro is equipped with a stabilized 12-megapixel camera capable of capturing 4K video at 30fps and FlightAutonomy visual navigation system, plus it features a 4.3 mile range and can be flown for 27 minutes before needing to be recharged.

FlightAutonomy, new in the Mavic Pro, consists of five cameras, GPS and GLONASS navigation systems, ultrasonic range finders, and 24 computing cores to navigate and plan routes for the drone. It can avoid obstacles while flying at 22 miles per hour, but it's also able to reach speeds up to 40 miles per hour.

Mavic Pro can be controlled via an included compact remote controller with a built-in LCD screen or through an iPhone or iPad with an accompanying app. When used with a smartphone, DJI says the Mavic Pro can be set up and made airborne in less than a minute.

DJI has priced the Mavic Pro at $999 with the remote controller and $749 without it. DJI is also offering additional batteries for $89 and a bundle with a Mavic Pro, two extra batteries, additional propellers, a charging hub, an adapter, a car charger, and a bag for $1,299.

The Mavic Pro is available for pre-order from the DJI website starting today, and will soon be able to be ordered from Apple.com. Apple is already promoting the Mavic Pro on the iPad accessory section of its website, though there is not yet a store listing for it. Apple retail stores will begin selling the DJI Mavic Pro in early November.

If you've ever dealt with DJI's customer service, this announcement probably won't be exciting to you.

Also, I wonder if they got their **** together and don't randomly block you even turning on the Phantom 4 indoors, in your own home. I ended up returning the Phamtom 4 after just a couple days. What a terrible company.

Sounds like someone had a poor experience and is using it to shame the company on a biased level.

Spend > 5 minutes on their forums and you'll realize I'm not alone. Read the app reviews where users have their aircrafts bricked with almost every update.

I have the 3 Professional and never did the software update just because I read about the issues before hand. So flying indoors is no problem. Also I never had to call DJI for any reason. Thanks for your input.

No, I used to own a Phantom 2 as well. I have flown drones for hundreds of hours. It wasn't that it was difficult to fly. When I was 'allowed' to fly it fly great! It wasn't the vision positioning system, it was DJI preventing the props from starting based on geolocation and no way to override its radom no fly areas.
Do you live next to an airport?
It may be the geofencing. and if so you can override that using a valid credit card, to akcnowledge that you're flying in a no-fly zone...which you're not if youre flying indoor.

the newer dgi go app is actually pretty stable. as is the new firmware updates for 3 series phantoms. I think you should go for it

They look similar, but the DJI seems to have better features. Love the blade guards on my DJI phantom not sure if that is an option on these.

It absolutely was due to geofencing; that was the problem. See my previous post. I lived near a baseball stadium, in the winter, there are no games, it's empty.

The override was nonexistent during the Phantom 4 launch. (I don't know if it's finally been fixed.) Supposedly they had a beta app you could download to override but multiple calls and emails weren't returned or I was directed to flysafe@dji.com and they never returned any emails. One of DJI's websites/maps would say 'this zone does not require unlocking' then in the app it would indicate a no fly zone without the ability to override.

Yes. There are legitimate no fly zones, such as international airports, where the drone won't start the props based on the GPS coordinates. You might be able to override at this point with some sort of verification each time you want to fly. I'm not certain of the current override details. The Mavic Pro has this same system.

This issue I had, was with the Phantom 4, the no fly zone system was in its infancy and didn't work as advertised. I lived near an unused baseball stadium and there was no way to fly at home, even indoors. Perhaps this has been fixed and you can ask for an override every time you want to fly?

Furthermore the map linked above only shows DIA in the Denver area, yet just a few months ago there were 100+ no fly zones, and another map lists 'special areas' that are no fly zones.

Again, if you're not anywhere near any of these NFZ it's great. If you are, DJI can make your new toy useless.

What do you want from Chinese customer service. I bought another drone and the bugger flew back home. I'm not kidding and I never manage to find it.

Ah that is horrible..
I didn't get it near launch and the geofencing feature of the app is functioning properly for me, so I can't relate to your situation

You scared me, I thought that DJI can block your drone from turning on forever or something. Thanks.

Yuneec has it also. And Yuneec just introduced the Breeze, already available for purchase. I would have to hear A LOT of positive feedback on DJI customer service (or lack thereof), before I buy anything they make. Right now, it's Autel and Yuneec for my fleet.

The Breeze has much sparser specs and 12 minute flying time. Its also half the cost. So its not really comparable.

I will be sticking with my phantom 3 standard. I like that the bigger drones wont get tossed around in the wind as much. Plus, my drone was half the cost of this one, only sacrificing features I don't really need. Obstacle avoidance is nice and all, but you really shouldnt rely on it to stop a thousand dollars flying 22mph from crashing into a building...

Best thing about this announcement is you can preorder now front apple without paying anything, wait until more reviews of the Karma come out and then decide whethere to keep the DJI preorder or not. I also get a $170 discount from the Apple Store so WINNING!

I was planning on getting a drone soon - DJI was at the top of my list. I hope to fly it primarily around my house and my in-laws across the street for fun and work purposes. I live south-east of Denver at the outskirts - 45 minutes south of DIA.

Looking at the maps above I don't see any NFZ here… what is your more recent experience?

Go to knowbeforeyoufly.org and FAA.gov/uas
Tons of information there, with the new part 107/101 Regs. Also there is an app that will tell you if you are in a no fly zone based on your location. App is called B4UFLY

BTW, it's 5 miles from ANY airport, not just big ones.

Poor GoPro. Their Karma was the game changer for only a week. Wah wah. As cool as the karma is, the DJI Mavic is cooler. Not only is it even smaller and MORE portable, it has a removable battery, flies longer and farther...and it also has a follow me feature which the karma doesn't.

Wow this makes the karma look amateurish. Note this is an incremental upgrade. Apple take note

Obstacle avoidance... That's DJI's huge advantage.
I'm not sure Karma have that feature though.

No, it does not. There are lot of things GoPro didn't talk about because they know their drone is already outdated on almost every aspect. It is shame because all this time they been working on it you would have thought they will bring something on pare or close to what's now the best.

Actually, good for them. You wouldn't want to hear that your products are a reason for Airplanes crashing down from sky because silly irresponsible people want to fly them just about anywhere. I have my Phantom 4 and I know where to fly it. I stay away from urban areas and I am fine to just fly it on mountains and remote places.

Between DJI and Yuneec's drones, I'd pick DJI hands-down every single time. 300 flights in on my Phantom 3 Professional and not one significant crash or glitch and I've never had to call customer service (so I can't speak to that). I had horrible experience with the Typhoon 4k I was training a friend to use, then saw this:

The irony for me is, only 5 weeks ago I bought a GoPro Hero4 with the Evo GP-Pro Gimbal and a DJI Phantom 4... and now I hear of all of these new announcements! Oh well, I probably need a back-up drone anyway, so I'll just get the Mavic (for guerrilla-style citizen journalism) and keep the Phantom 4 to do my filmmaking work.

Either way, with both the Karma and the Mavic announcements, such a great time we live in for technology in general! (I'm also a composer/synthesist and the same thing is happening in the synth world; with great digital synths coming out as well as a resurgence of new Analogs and Modular synths to boot!)
