Why is it that the 17 inch mbp has the 8x drive when the 15 inch is the same thickness?
 
Because the drive inside isn't the same thickness, and the only drive available, at least when the C2D MacBook Pro came out, is a 6x drive. The thickness constraint is due to the touchpad being above the SuperDrive in the 15" model.
