That’s actually interesting. How does it communicate to my desktop DAW?

It has its own workflow that includes a sequencer. It's not intended as a companion to a DAW but a workflow of it's own and an instrument of it's own. You can export anything you create in it to m4a and then import that to your DAW but it does not specifically connect to or work with your workstation.

Oh, that was not obvious. So I could still use it as a (simple) sequencer for u-he Diva by importing my tracks both ways, at least? That would make my life somewhat easier.

I believe you should be able to.
MixPad is hard to describe because there aren't many apps outthere similar to it or with it's work flow. It's a combination Mix board sequencer system. If you're old enough to remember the only thing similar to it is it's inspiration MixMan which as far as I know no longer exists at least not for mac/ipad So you know there is also a mac version of this app
