Do all USB-connected external hard drives work on Lion?

    Any hard drive will work with any OS. It just depends on how it's formatted. Even if it's preformatted for Windows, you can easily reformat it for use with Macs.

    Any external HDDs will work with Time Machine, as long as the storage size is same or bigger than your internal HDD.

    Anything that supports USB Mass Storage mode should work.

    Depending on your Mac you can also use a FireWire, Secondary Internal, Partitioned Primary, ThunderBolt, NAS, Time Capsule, ect. (If the OS can mount it as a drive and write to it, there's a good chance you can use it.)
