So I've never bothered to turn off 5G on my phones, until now. I decided to do this because I was having signal issues at my new office. Which in turn caused battery drain issues. So the first thing I noticed is, my data speeds increased at places where I had a weak signal. So it turns out a weak 5G signal is no comparison to a mediocre to strong LTE signal. My data speeds in general have improved overall. It also solved my battery drain issues. I haven't been tracking battery life, but I would say battery life has had an improvement even before the signal issues. So if you haven't ever bothered to turn off 5G, give it a try if your having signal issues, data speed issues, or even battery drain issues.

5G is not all it's cracked up to be. The speeds are fast, but the signal itself is weak, so I frequently find my data service cutting out while my phone temporarily connects to a weak 5G signal, only to drop it soon after. 5G is great in urban centers where the 5G reception is strong, but in other areas, I often prefer to limit my phone to LTE rather than have it struggle to connect to a weak 5G signal.

At my work place 5G on Tmobile is blazing. I get around 700 Mbps to 900 Mbps. At my home I used to horrible single digit speeds. They've stepped up their coverage in my home town. I now get around 150-300 Mbps depending on my room. So IDK, 5g for me has been pretty good.

Sometimes LTE is indeed faster, but in my experience it’s not enough difference to bother turning off 5G. I could see a situation where it might help but it’d be an edge-case, not a general “best practice.”
