As always, it depends. Retina displays are great for text but for photographers, unless you double the size of images on your website (which makes them more attractive targets for image theft), they look fuzzy compared with native resolution displays such as the Air.

That's not a great argument to hamstrung a new piece of hardware honestly.

All Retina is the future. The sooner we are there, the better.

Honestly - we already are there from Apple's perspective I'm sure.

They seemed to think the nTB MBP was a great "new Air". It's not. It misses so much of what has been great about the MBA.

Oh well..
We are just busy fantasizing here about something that won't ever happen sadly.
:-(

I have a 13” mid-2011 with 4 GB memory. Never had a retina screen so I don’t miss. it. Only thing I have done is change out the drive and replaced it with a 1 TB Aura Pro Internal Drive. It is by far the best computer I have ever owned, bar none.

I have started to use my 2014 11" Air a little more. I have a 2016 15" MacBook Pro that is my main Mac, but I find the 11" easier to throw in a bag. I do notice the screen not being Retina a lot. It's not a complete deal-beaker but I do notice it.

You can't beat the portability, though.

I wanted a backup computer to my mid-2011 Air. Since I refuse to buy new with the outlandish prices, I tend to look for refurbs's - either directly from Apple or from someone like OWC. I found a 13" MBP mid-2012 with 16 GB memory and a 2 TB SATA drive at a price I couldn't turn down. Now it has become my main machine. It is much faster and I don't mind the slight additional weight. Either one can serve my needs and for now I choose the Pro.

Every now and then I wonder what would happened if instead of getting the 2014 MacBook Air in early 2015, I got the 13" Retina instead. I bet I wouldn't get the 2016 15 and would have kept that one going.

I never minded the keyboard on my pro and MacBook but man I can fly typing on this thing and I make fewer mistakes and the battery life on the air is insane!

Reading this makes me very reluctant to ever purchase a laptop with butterfly switches. I'm loving the scissor switches on my 2008 MacBook. I plan to upgrade to a MacBook Air at some point.

Recently sold my 2015 rMBP and kept the 2016 MBA -- not having a retina screen doesn't bother me one bit. Prefer the MBA's portability and doesn't get anywhere near as hot as the rMBP would during Netflix binge sessions. Even with half the RAM (8GB for the MBA versus 16GB for the rMBP), still go with the Air. As others have said, I may buy another "current" MBA (without the retina) before the alleged upgrade, since the cost point is so low...
