Do Apple Geniuses deserve their title?

Oh well then thats different :p, but anyways not trying to be a ass about it, but I guess in your case don't even take a picture of food around your Mac or accidents will happen. XD

Anyways sorry about the loss, and sorry you got nowhere with Mac Geniuses, all I can say is if its already cost you $1200 for repairs just go ahead and buy a new one, and when you do keep liquids away. ;)

woo wait. big misunderstanding.

woo wait. big misunderstanding. the geniuses told me it would be 1200 to fix it. I took my computer and split. Later that day I found a work around that fixed everything with a simple terminal command.

Repair costs = 0

If I were in your position, I would be tickled pink to be given the time of day under warranty. And I have been.

I disagree. Sure you have to be at least a little into computers to be on these boards but I think most people will at least search their problems first. Especially since you have to wait a day or two until you can make a reservation to speak with a 'genius'.

How many "most people" have you met, exactly? Of all of the questions on this board, I can answer 25% off the top of my head and another 50% with the aid of Google. Most people don't appreciate the magic that is a well-crafted search query.

Of course, I'll be the first to admit that the perception is a bit skewed. After all, the people who search and solve their problem – don't post.

My girlfriend's DELL is covered for accidental damage like a spill or drop and she paid around 150 where as my applecare was 250 and only covers me when their product flat at fails for no reason.

Your girlfriend has a form of insurance, not warranty. A warranty is a guarantee that the item is sold as advertised and will be without defect. If there is a defect, it will be fixed or replaced. Why would apple pay for a repair that was caused you? Apple takes responsibility when a computer problem is their own fault, and you should take responsibility when it's yours.

I work in tech support with Apple computers, and most people do not google the answers. They see a problem, they bring it to tech support. I have helped many people by googling their problems.

Getting a reservation at an Apple Store for a genius has hardly ever taken more than one day, nevermind two. I used to work at one and 90% of the time the wait was less than 2 hours. The other 10% we would accept walk-ins, unless it was close to closing time.

I guess that all is well now I can laugh about it. But I wasn't actually drinking near my computer. What happened was I held my General Tso's tofu up to my camera to show a friend and didn't realize i was pouring it out.

Well, you weren't drinking near your computer, but you were certainly eating near your computer! ;)

I understand you why you'd defend a company you work for. But apple doesn't exactly take responsibility when something is their fault. We pay for that support when we purchase applecare.

I guess myself and friends of mine have had exceptionally bad luck making reservations.

I'm just pointing out my own experiences. And taking in other's opinions. In my mind 'genius' is the wrong word.

Must i tell you again?? PLEASE BUY YOUR SELVES A SILICONE KEYBOARD COVER!!

I like how you try to speak for the whole of macrumors and do so to a member who has been here 2 years longer than you. Personally I'm noticing the quality of members declining with site age, but I blame the iPhone for that. :p

Aaaanyway, yes, applecare's limitations and the apple "geniuses" suck, and not in the fun way.

oh i know, to see the trend of new macrumors members become less nerdy and more diversified, interested in things other than technology. The humanity...

something that isn't warranted.

unwarranted repair

That didn't look right to me. It took be awhile before resorting to dictionary.com (doh!) where I confirmed the correct spelling: warrantied

As is was spelled, that's an entirely different word. (warrant vs. warranty)[and no, warrantee is not a variant spelling, it's a person]

Just in case anyone else was scratching his/her head over that too...

O.K. I just called the Apple Store At The Westfarms Mall In CT. I asked if they had the iSkin for the MBP keyboard, and he said yes. I asked how much are they and he said they are $24.99 & $30.00 depending on the size of the MBP. I then proceeded to tell him what a Mac salesman told me, which is the keyboards are the same size for all the MBP's. The reason this matters to me is my wife just picked up a 13.3" MBP and I am getting a 15" MBP. My wife was not sure if she would like the iSkin and if she did not I can then use it on mine. Anyhow this is opposing information from the same brick and mortar store. I am now confused and will get to the bottom of this by using Google. Wish Me Luck !!!!! :D :apple::apple:

Basically a keyboard spill on my macbook pro is causing the hardware to malfunction in a way that keeps it from going into sleep mode. 2 Geniuses and a authorized repair shop later and all agree I need a complete rebuild not covered under warranty, 1200 dollars.

Kept digging around online and discovered there are actually 5 different sleep modes and that they can be activated with terminal. I'm now using "hibernation" mode which works fine and I'm preferring anyways because while in this sleep mode it uses zero battery.

None of those guys even came close to actually trying to solve my problem.
problem = liquid spill caused hardware damage
symptom = MBP won't sleep
solution to problem = repair hardware damaged by liquid

workaround of symptom = bypass sleep mode (by using hibernation)

IMO, they nailed the proper solution of the actual problem.

I've glad you found a workaround of the symptom -- and hopefully no additional symptoms will pop up as time goes on.

I despise the whole concept of the genius bar, the geniuses at them, and booking slots to get any help.
How would appointment-less tech support in a busy environment work?

Would you just walk-in, stand in a line and wait until its your turn? FIFO?

I think your blanket statement about all Mac Geniuses is a bit undeserved. Just because you've had a bad experience with multiple geniuses, doesn't mean any and all geniuses are bad/useless.

I used to work at an Apple Retail Store and the capabilities and knowledge of the geniuses varied greatly. Some where better than others, and some were far overqualified for their positions. Needless to say, I've had great experiences with all of my trips to the Genius Bar thus far and have always had a 100% resolution rate on the 1st try. My most recent trip to the Genius bar was due to a fault power supply which would cause my system to power down unexpectedly. Genius heard my description of the problem, immediately knew what was wrong, and had a replacement for me the next day (they had to overnight a part to their store).

I agree my generalization was unfair. I changed the thread title.
