On the plus side though, most malls/ shopping centers do open early so you can get a nice spot right outside the store (along with a few hundred others).

Too bad the local store here is in an outdoor mall! Tents still required.

Idk about stand alone locations, but the mall locations usually do. When I waited for the iPhone 4, the Apple Store opened 2 hours before the actual mall itself.

To be fair, most Apple Stores tend to open much earlier than your typical retail store. The one closest to me opens at 8 AM.

All of the ones around me at 10AM. Even an hour drive away is 10AM.

Here in Canada Apple Stores typically open at 10am, but on iPhone launch days they normally push it back to 8am. Both the 4 and 4S launches were like that.
