Do apps need to be updated to run in split view?

I want ios9 mainly for the ability to run apps side by side on my air 2. I have read conflicting info on how it will work. Will it only work with apps that have been updated to run with this feature? Is there a way to know if the apps are compatible or not?

Yes. Most apps updating right now are including in their update notes whether or not the update supports iOS 9's "split view."

Correct, apps need to be updated first in order to support slide over/split view.
