Do those maintenance programs really help with system performance? For example there is one called Maintenance.

If they do work, which is the best?

Just google for OnyX, very nice program and conforms to the sexyness of OSX. Plus it's completely free.

OSX does a lot of these maintenance tasks itself. These apps are fantastic but I highly recommend you leave them alone unless you know what you're doing. If you let your machine sleep at night rather than shut it down, then it'll run the periodicals in the morning at wake up. That's about all you need. :)

Onyx is great but be careful

I really like Onyx, it's a really simple to use program and has some great features, but maintenance programs will give the user more more options, more operations that run at the root level. If you are not sure of what your doing you can end up wrecking you computer.

That being said OSX does it's own maintenance over night when left on. For most people this is all that really needs to be done.
