NYC
I live in NYC (Manhattan in the east teens). For whatever reason, I happen to live in a small EDGE black hole. If I walk a few blocks north, south, or west, I get good EDGE service, but in my little neighborhood, it's GPRS only on my iPhone. It's been that way since June '07, when I switched from T-Mobile (which was equally EDGE-less on my block).

AT&T looked up my street address and kindly informed me I had excellent EDGE coverage in my hood. Hah.

I'm wondering if I can expect the same (lack of) coverage with 3G, or if 3G uses a different set of towers or something.

Only one way to find out. Either way call and complain if it doesn't. You should paying for fast mobile internet if you can't even use it at home.
