I bought my first Mac, a 1.33Ghz 12" PB with a combo drive, 3 months ago. I've got an external Firewire enclosure and now the DVD burners are pretty cheap I'm going to buy a drive and install it in my enclosure.

I'm wondering what speed will be possible over the Firewire connection, i.e. can I expect 4x or better?

Thanks

just be sure to look for one that might be compatiable with idvd (an amazing dvd authorting program)

Good luck with that. 😉

iDVD can be hacked to support external burners though.

We use external burners in an art lab. They work just as good as the newer computers with internal ones.

Thanks for the replies. I've read about the hacks for iDVD, I just didn't want to pay extra for an 8x or faster if the Firewire interface was going to be a bottleneck.
