I want to get some sort of basic scratch protection for my new 2018 15 inch, and don't want a skin because I don't like the idea of something permanently stuck on. I am looking at this case by iBlason which has good reviews:

https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B01M8O9OSE/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

There is a lot of conflicting information on this online. Does the top half of these cases damage the hinge over time or is that not something to worry about? Whatever happens, I do want to use the bottom cover at least so I don't need to worry about any surface I place it down on.

Thanks

Have used top and bottom shells on various laptops for years and have never had a problem. Skins can very easily be removed as well. Both non issues.

Debris will get between the case and device and abrade the anodized surface. I have a friend who used one very similar for over a year and when he removed it to sell the laptop it was full of ugly rub marks that would not remove.

so best to just go without anything?

I have for years. I am quit careful and do put it in a case when traveling. Just simple sleeve will protect when out and about. I can not make judgements for you as I do not know where you go with your computer. I am pretty well a hose to office user with some work in the field.

If you are the clutz type and have lots of accidents, this case could help with the minor scrape or scuff but over time the case will turn on you.

My sister’s 2015 looks rough now due to this.

I had no problems with a shell (hard case) on my 2015 15" mbp. The systems metal looked like new when I took the shell off last week. Not a single scratch after having the shell on it for 2 years.

The only downside with these shells is bulk and they hide the original bodies good looks. So for my new 2018 15" in Space Gray I have an clear iBlason shell AND a BestSkinEver skin. I am going to install the skin first and see how it feels. And if I think it will protect the unit well enough I will send back the shell.

I think most damage is done when the laptop is in transit. You can buy an inexpensive neoprene case on Amazon for about $10-$15. When you take the laptop out of the house/office, put it in the case. That should take care of most of the problems.

I have a bestskinsever full body cover and then I have the Moshi Glaze as well. Protects my MacBooks from scratches should something like dust and dirt get inside the casing.

Usually I take out the case and then clean it every two months. All my MacBooks are good as new.
